Every console past the SNES had something dumb about it that held it back on top of missing out on lots of games. The Wii was a fluke. The Wii U was a mistake. The name, marketing and weak hardware was a recipe for disaster.Every Nintendo home console from the NES to the Wii U with the exception of the Wii has sold worse than it's predecessor. The Wii U won't crack 15 million in sales worldwide before it gets discontinued.
NES sold 61 million
SNES sold 49 million
N64 sold 32 million
Gamecube sold 22 million
Wii sold 100 Million
Wii U is at 13 or so million
Unless Nintendo can come up with another gimmick it's clear their diminishing home console audience likely won't push their next system past even the Wii U's numbers. Nintendo seems to drop about a 10 million purchase loss average between most of their generations.
Nintendo should just try to appeal to western taste and make something for both markets. If they could pull out a show stopper at E3 and copy Sony moves(low price, perception that their hardware is top of the line and showstopper games, they might reel in some fans.)
Each gen for Nintendo is unpredictable.
