Gotta be an industry chosen one, otherwise the blogosphere and "journalists" will spend a lot time trying to convince everyone that you suck despite your popularity not putting out club bangers, shoot-a-nikka dead tracks and crack tales (:duck:).

The real truth:
  1. Rappers make boring songs / beats under every theme but we still don't dismiss the themes. So we look for that partying, street, dance or smoking etc. rap and we are willing to wait until a good song under one of those themes comes along.
  2. Many people don't want to hear anything to uplift them. We are content with the dumb. Its the same reason PBS doesn't have TBS' ratings. Or why Action flicks sell more than documentaries.
  3. Don't give me the excuse that really smart people like dumb music because this is a lie of generalization. I know a lot of smart people who like smart socially aware music.
  4. Don't tell me that you will learn it in a book. Yes, books teach and uplift but not like music. Music can make a knuckle headed kid crack open a book if it said to do so. Music can move the soul and it has been proven in the past that music speaks to people and can motivate them.
  5. Conscious music was actually literally cool at one point I'm sorry that you are too young or too non-Black to get that ...
  6. Most people who hate conscious music fall into two categories- a.Blacks with little to no self awareness and - b.Non Blacks who have little to no Black awareness

Y'all must be hella young or were in a coma for years at a time because Conscious Rap was huge in the early 2000's. Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez etc. were all heavy on BET, radioplay back in 99'-04'. Conscious rappers like Mos Def and Dead Prez were scoring hits back then that competed with bling-bling era Cash Money. Basically, almost every rapper who was on the Chappelle Show musical guest list was dropping some classic conscious Hip Hop in the late 90's/early 2000's. Black Star debut album is a classic. The Roots Things Fall A Part is a classic. Mos Def Black on Both Sides is a classic. Kanye West College Dropout is a classic. Kanye had "All Falls Down" and "Jesus Walks" on the radio. :ohhh: Even seasoned legendary rappers like Nas took a more conscious stance on certain songs on God's Son and Streets Disciple. I'd say Conscious Rap in the mainstream died when all the alternative Neo-Soul/Nouveau Native Tongues era fizzled out and South mainstream Snap/Ringtone Rap took over and eventually gave way to Trap music. :yeshrug:

This all day. All those people you mentioned were popping during my college years and it was good time to be a black kid in college because lots of black college kids were in that scene (wouldn't trade it for the world).

That's why I have to kinda laugh when people say hip hop is more diverse now just because you have two rappers in the mainstream making that sort of music (jcole and kendrick).

its because they don't appeal to everyone.

Some of the most educated people I know don't listen to conscious music. Why shuold they? They're not trying to be preached to by artists who are ON AVERAGE not even college educated or well read into anything they're even trying to talk about. even further, most conscious artists don't invest in making their music sound good enough to hear more than once.

so somebody has to be educated to speak how they have been treated in amerikkka.:patrice:

if they are tryna teach trig...okay.

i do believe they need to research/have a degree in black history extensively if they wanna really go in depth on that subject.

Tupac wasn't a conscious rapper so to speak. He had conscious themes but so did almost everyone in the 90's. A lot of rappers had one or two socially aware tracks or at least a few lines here and there. So Tupac wasn't of the mold of a strictly conscious rapper he was just a product of his time.

mostly every rapper is.

pac had real cred cause of his mom n dad being black panthers. he came from real black struggle lineage.

But if so about K dot he's one artist they got right...he has IT factor(could still get boring during a show though)

he doesnt have an IT factor. if he did, he be as popular as his hype & industry accolades push for him to be.

he makes random rawkus rappers look like ll cool j with the star-power & IT factor.

Just back down my dude. Black people are awakening and becoming mentally aware. Seems to me that this threatens you.:mjpls: Im not the only one in here speaking the truth. If you "shut" me down or even WANT to, that says more about YOU, a supposed black man.

lol.

go outside.

They all get radio push.

In a few months from now another street rapper will get a push as well.

thats it? a radio push?

wheres the big machine pushes? wheres the phoney accolades from the media & writers? wheres all the phoney awards victories? wheres the big-time placements?

dudes like big sean get bigger pushes than meek millz.

lol @ the other cats you were mentioning.

They are all street rappers lol.

Im saying they push is for street rappers in general not Cheef Keef alone. :snoop:

People still fukk with the radio. Its how most of these street rappers survive in this era when in last era they wouldnt have seen the light of day lol.

All the radio does is play the same 10 songs all day until people are forced to accept it.

hate to break the news to you, but the radio doesnt cater to the streets AT ALL.

street rappers arent surviving off radio. most of the popular street rappers arent even on radio.

just say you want to hear more of what YOU like and keep it moving.

2 albums completely knocked "intelligent/conscious" rap out:

Dr.DreTheChronic.jpg

everybody talks about the CHRONIC and how it killed conscious rap music but I personally think that's a bit of a cop out - you still had common, the roots, mos def etc etc...it wasn't completely dead by the time this came out, it did kill mainstream conscious rap and ended a lot of careers

Tru_True.jpg

for whatever reason nobody talks about this record...when I was in high school, EVERYBODY had this shyt. EVERYBODY. this was before No Limit blew up like they did, they were bubbling underground first and the shyt was like CRACK. I never heard this bullshyt and don't know any songs off of it, but I saw this album cover so many fukking times it was CRAZY!!!

when this shyt got popular, it was a WRAP for any type of "preachy" rap for my generation...it was simply not tolerated any more...if it wasn't ignorant, ghetto, stupid, and about dope/guns, nikkas didn't wanna hear it...and we've been in that place ever since, i've just learned to accept it

if you never heard the album, then how do you know what its about?

i never heard it, but i know ive heard more consciousness & black empowerment from a master p or TRU album than i heard from alot of so-called conscious rappers's LPs.

i dont know about alot of these dudes, but i was into hip-hop when the conscious chit was jammin just as much as the next man.

you didnt even dwell on it like "this is conscious". artists used to just get it in like they were supposed to.

You would pick the show with the weakest African references, but they would wear Kente cloth, kofia hats, medallions etc. on these shows that I referenced. I'm glad they did rep. the culture because outsiders always want to rewrite our history. At least with popular TV shows repping Black culture it is preserved in time as fact. If you are not Black and were not alive back then don't fight history just sit and learn. True students of life always want to learn the facts and not skew them, White supremacists never want the real truth to be told.

yes, I am a white supremacist sitting in a hip-hop forum. You caught me
