They really don’t… I know several teachers that make like 60k. They only work like 9 months out of the year as well. Throw in summer school, they’re close to 70k. Balling? No but definitely decent.
Depends on a ton of factors, including the district, seniority, credentials, etc.
If you actually paid teachers what they were worth then they would be getting 6-figure salaries. Y'all really thinking a fukking code monkey or salesman or public works director benefits society more than a teacher does? Yeah, many teachers aren't doing work worthy of that, but in part that's cause you get what you pay for.

Not that I actually would pay teachers 6-figures, but I argue they're worth it. If I had the ability to reform the education system I would bump teacher salaries a little bit but do a ton of work to make their jobs both more tolerable and more rewarding.

It's a myth that teachers only work 9 months. School doesn't end until the end of June and you have to report back at the end of August. While school is in session I worked on average 55-hour weeks between class, lesson prep, grading, and after-school shyt. And until you're established and have been working for years you have to spend a huge part of your summer prepping your classroom and syllabus for the next year plus doing coursework and/or "continuing education" to get your credential or keep it fresh. With the class prep and grading and student events you end up working weekends, working breaks, etc.
Teaching was FAR more stressful and time-consuming than any 40-hour job I've ever had.
