This shyt is so dumb. I'm just tired of the stupidity -- and trying to make things difficult - when it's really not.

You and your ancestors have to be classified as Black, AA, Negro or Colored - at-least 10 years prior on the Census.

Which is RACE - but it is also based on ethnicity -- which is Black American/AA/ADOS - 90% of the Black People in this Country.

And you have to be a descendant of the enslaved in Colonial and Antebellum era Chattel Slavery -- which is LINEAGE.

Eligibility for reparations should have two criteria. First, individuals
would have to establish that they are indeed descendants of persons formerly
enslaved in the United States. Second, individuals would have to establish
that at least 10 years prior to the adoption of a reparations program they
self-identified as ‘‘black,’’ ‘‘African American,’’ ‘‘Negro,’’ or ‘‘colored.’’ This
would preclude persons who have lived as white, thereby benefiting from
white privilege, suddenly claiming a black identity to access reparations
(Darity and Frank, 2003:327).​

It's an interesting discussion, even though I can't fully tell where they stand


Cliffs:

• They go thru bits of some Henry Louis Gates doc where black and white people discover their ancestors' encounter with one another or that they're related.
• Start talmbout how "that's your cousin"
• Made a bit of "White ADOS" and "Colonists" (Euro immigrants).
• Point out that there would be whites that make the ADOS claim and they'd be right.

• A lawyer would prolly have to speak on it, but I don't think Darity's rule of having at least one ancestor and your ancestors identifying on censuses is protective enough. These would STILL be "American Descendants of Slavery"... Lineage is the key, right? Race is the con that allows black immigrants in-- at least that's how I understand it. So wouldn't race be a con on census records too??? They talk about those that passed as white taking advantage, idk. Discuss

Why is it trolling to share something from people who agree with you more than I do? Anybody else that's addressed the OP directly managed to share their point without ad hominems.

I get the lineage part, I'm not understanding how race is being hooked back in. On one end, y'all say black/AA/etc aren't specific enough for who we are, yet it becomes a crutch for whites who could very well have the same lineage. That's part of the message from the video: Like it or not, they are logically and technically American Descendants of Slavery. Checking a box doesn't change that and legally speaking, that could be something that has to be dealt with... and that deal is gonna be a lot harder than the Africans/Caribbeans that cause so much hand wringing

Back to the topic, we all know why it's not African American Descendants of Slavery, but it's not Black American Descendants of Slavery. Or anything denoting black or African.


The whole term "American Descendants of Slavery" was carefully crafted to deescalate and/or disarm with topic of race on reparations. But then it's snuck back in??? Idk how y'all think that'll be received, but I'd imagine a lot of people would be confused, same way some where on #ADOS being a group vs a lineage
