He said that when he went to drive it was to dunk but he felt pain in his knee and wasn't going to make it there so he went for the finger roll and..... well you know the rest. Missed layup, Riles faxes his resignation from the yacht and that's the end of the Knicks chapter
Even then - even if he makes that shot - that was only the ECSF, they would've had to beat a young Magic team with Shaq and Penny, that was no gimme; then beat the Rockets which I don't think was going to happen under any set of circumstances.
Definitely, they would have been the underdog against the Shaq/Penny led Magic team. I don’t think they would have beaten Orlando.
That’s assuming they even win that game against Indiana. Knicks were down 2 when Ewing missed the finger roll so it would have gone to OT.
Their best chances were 93’ and 94’. They had the 2-0 lead against Chicago in 93’ but couldn’t take advantage. The 94’ finals was a very competitive series, and perhaps they were a block away (Hakeem on Starks) from winning it all. Ewing struggled badly offensively throughout the series and unfortunately had to deal with Hakeem in the midst of one of the best 2 year runs (actually 3, he was great in 92-93) ever.
They had a good team in 97’ with that whole mess against the Heat with the PJ Brown/Charlie Ward fight. But it’s still hard to picture them actually beating the Bulls.
Knicks had some good squads but I don’t think they were as talented as the Bulls so it’s not like they underachieved or anything.
