Why can't I enjoy 90's hip-hop?

"They're just bars. There's no real melody"

Prediction: In 20 Years Black People Aren't Gonna Like Rap Music PERIOD

Rap listeners have been conditioned to gravitate away from bars/words to melodies.

Listeners are becoming more and more lazy when it comes to actual lyricism, and sing-songy, melodic, cat in the hat, Dr. Suess flows have taken precedent.

OP is 18 so of course "words" will be a chore for him to listen to. Concentrating on every word a rapper says is becoming a thing of the past. Its more about "vibing" to a melodic flow over a hot beat. Subject matter be damned. Just a hot beat and catchy flow saying anything is all that's needed today to capture the attention of listeners.

No offense to anybody reading this, but the "intelligence" in hip-hop overall has been drained severely. (That's a FACT, not an opinion)

This melodic, sing-songy rap is like nursery rhymes to little kids. Its hypnotizing. Its catchy. It requires little to no work of the brain. Its easy to listen to and digest. Modern-day hip-hop for the most part is aimed at the equivalent of 6th graders.
im not a fan of the modern-day rap u talk about

i very rarely enjoy the new yachty/uzi/21 savage stuff. some songs here and there, but the rappers that i mess with are cole, kendikk, drake, mac miller, logic, kanye, big sean, etc.

anyway, i think the problem is that jay'z volume albums are just not that good. i like reasonable doubt and blueprint.

nikka u trolling :snoop:
I said musically/sonically are you dumb? This not counting lyrics dumbass :mjlol:... I'm talking about song structure and the more artist side to music.... Hip Hop in the 90's had more imperfections and blemishes but those blemishes actually made the records lowkey ... Sonically Rap was still apart of the streets in the 90's and wasn't as advanced as it is now that's why people love it so much ...

18 years old.

I been making my way through Jay-Z discography. I like Reasonable Doubt but vol 1, 2, and 3 are hella boring to me.

A lot of Wu Tang songs sound really boring to me.

They're just bars. There's no real melody. I'm sure if I printed out lyrics I'd appreciate it, but they don't sound fun to me. Fun songs to me are like Drake - 4PM in Calabasas, Kendrick Lamar - DNA, J.Cole - Neighbours, Vince Staples - Big Fish, etc.

I like some 90's songs like Ice Cream and Atliens, but I can't listen to a full album cause it gets boring. 4:44 >>>>>>> any Jay-Z album for me. Is it really that hard to enjoy stuff before your time?

Your first mistake is listening to Jay shyt

I don't blame you because you came up in an era where Jay is the God Rapper so you naturally assumed he is the first person u should turn to. And now you realize the media had you bamboozled

:ohlawd:

I understand how you feel young one about melody. Im 33 and came up on west coast hip hop which I gravitated to because it was so melodic

Get you some Bone, Pac, Snoop and some Biggie in your life

That's smart, you're going catalogue to catalogue

When you are ready, get into some west coast Death Row shyt

Doggystyle
Dogg Food
Regulate G Funk Era
E1999 Eternal
All Eyez On Me

Understandably to a young man like yourself, 90s rap will be dated regardless. I felt like that about 80s rap coming up, but you'll be surprised how much of this stuff you'll come to love.
