Cuz a lot of these weirdos only like 808s and ignorance.

Also there's this weird contrarianism this place has with anything that white critics praise. We had people here using that same logic with the fukking Wu-Tang Clan :mjlol:

Like they think if something gets praised by whites then clearly it's watered down safe negro c00n shyt.

Because half the Coli has been infested with white people
White people LOVE this album. :mjlol:

The reviews it received and the praise it got in white liberal academic circles is no mistake neither are the shows on his tour.

If anything young black people failed to appreciate this album and Future and Drake ran the year.

I love how the dynamic in this thread is either:

  • White people like it so it must be water down.
  • It's critically acclaimed / sells well, so it must be good.
With that said, I don't think it's a bad album, it got good beats, but the depth of content matter is kinda shallow for the perch that people are placing. The timing of the release definitely helped in the perception.

cause its popular. anything that is highly popular is gonna have its detractors.

and when this album came out it was massive. i was a freshman in college at the time and everybody was listening to it. the hype was just crazy. so it makes sense it has a lot of vocal critics.
From my vantage point it was different. The "i" single that was supposed to be a chart topper and was made the official song of the NBA barely cracked the top 40. It didn't have singles that resonated or could be played in social settings. Too many young brehs were too conditioned to 808's and couldn't appreciate the jazz and funk sound of this album. Upon drop Kendrick had put out a tweet complaining about his sales in his hometown of Los Angeles.

This album was never appreciated like it should have and liberal yuppy cacs latched onto it, Kendrick went deeper into the festival type crowd, and the lyrics began being dissected at university lectures and shyt.

I would say TPAB was a flop, there's a disconnect with it, good album but not how I figured Kendrick sophomore LP coming off a "classic" would go, and we know the label put a lot of money behind it.

i was at a PWI when it dropped so the people youre describing as latching onto it were very visible. i said something like that in another post in this thread

I don't hate it at all but it's overrated.

It's way better than TPAB.
TPAB hits harder to me with what he's rapping about, his flows, the production and the concept of the project. Its more relatable to me too. T&Y is definitely more lyrical and has more current production so I understand how it can be seen as better

They're both dense and artistic albums. Lupe put out a fantastic rap album with lyrical exhibitions and great songs that make you really think and try to decode everything. TPAB transcended hip hop and just means alot more imo

The school I went to wasn't technically an HBCU but pretty much was far as campus life with mostly students from the city that went away for school.

DS2 and Future's mixtapes, What A Time, If You're Reading This, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Rodeo, Barter 6 and other Thug tapes, SremmLife, Migos music, Fetty Wap music, GS9 music, Speaker Knockerz music, Ballin' Like I'm Kobe, SoundCloud era was starting to bubble. I would say that was the soundtrack in 2015. Kendrick shyt really wasn't played at all.

tbh. I'm 26. When people talk about Nas, they often said his album releases felt more like an "event" than anything else. TPAB was probably the only time that EVERYONE stood up and took notice of what someone was doing, fan or not. Just something to note.

now as far as the actual question? Guess it just ain't for them.
