simple answer: these rappers weren't FASHION DESIGNERS!

a fashion designer just like a rapper or any type of profession requires SKILLS. Point blank, you gotta have a passion for what you're doing in order for the quality to show and have success longterm. That's why Kanye struck gold with the Yeezy's and some of his clothing. Cuz this mf actually loves that designing sh*t! :blessed:

If you're a rapper and want your clothing brand to actually be a longterm success, simply hire a FASHION DESIGNER, put some blood sweat and tears into it with your fashion partner and focus on it. You can't just be doing the rap thing, tell your employees, "yall do what it do" and expect to be a success over night, that's just not things work in any industry :snoop:

Play Cloths, by Pusha T, ruined their own brand by mass producing. The first couple of seasons of the brand were hot commodities and had the Internet going crazy back from 2008-2010. It would have had a longer shelf life like other street wear brands had they stuck to that model.

The European and Japanese brands are simply better than the urban crap that was made with no staying power. Look in your closet now and if you have some Ecko, Akademiks or Sean John, can you wear it today? Like Ralph Lauren, I can wear pieces from 10+ years ago and it would still be fresh because it wasn't dated by the time it was made. There was zero foresight with these brands. I'll go a bit further and say it was a money laundering scheme for many.

you don't know what you are talking about

only cornball brothers wore ecko, that shyt was never fly, and I don't have it in my closet, Akademiks started off high quality they sold in the same stores they sold all the high end shyt, but eventually they went cheap too and couldn't sustain because people didn't have the money to buy it, shyt was never a staple in street wear

Sean John is the same as Rocawear, it started off high quality then went cheap to macy's, all these brands were never real street wear to begin with

Real Street wear is Pelle Pelle, Mauri, you never had the money to buy real clothes that's why you say that

The real Ralph Lauren is expensive they don't sell that shyt at Macy's, that's the regular shyt, and got Polo and Ralph Lauren at TJ Max just like Rocawear they got cheap shyt too

This is my original point.

but people still wear streetwear. Palace, Bape. ALD, supreme, etc are still huge

it’s just that designers like Gucci and Fendi started making streetwear and it splintered the markets

That's not that street wear, that's hipster shyt, Pharrell brought that style into hip hop

Gucci and Fendi always had street wear, they make different styles of clothes, black people never wore the gucci white people wore

when Gucci was popular in the early 2000s, it was the sports wear, the visors, velour suits, the shorts with the gucci print, nobody wore the gucci shyt that looked like fashion show runway shyt

People confusing rapper brands with urban clothing, urban clothing existed before rappers started endorsing brands

FUBU was never at the upper echelon of urban fashion shyt was always mid, a step above phat farm, shyt was like some shyt kids wore but they did have some high quality stuff in the beginning and it was expensive, but they sold the company and the brand became a cheap brand

People abandoned the tried and true urban fashion, they abandoned Pelle Pelle which still makes high quality coats, they don't want to look hard anymore people wanna look like safe negroes or weirdos

that's just what it is, nothing happened to urban street wear nikkaz abandoned it

Mauri's is still the shyt, most Urban Street Wear don't have brand names but cost a lot of money, you gotta go to stores that sell that shyt but most peple can't afford the real shyt so don't know shop in those places are no about it

Sean John was never high end it was always mid, same with Rocawear, only expensive clothes they had were the velour suits when they were popular

Coogi never went no where, they still make shyt

nikkaZ JUST ABANDONED IT

Gucci, fendi, and Polo nikkaz always wore that shyt, before rappers had brands

I must have struck a nerve. Urban wear included the brands I listed. Phat Farm, Baby Phat, ENYCE, South Pole, Karl Kani and FUBU are among the brands that would fall under the urbanwear umbrella. That's the stuff people were wearing.

Because they end up at Marshalls and TJ Maxx and no nikka with "drip" wants to wear shyt that's at those spots.

You can see it happening to Off White too.

Plus, they're not progressive. Black people are taste makers and gate keepers when it comes to fashion and a lot of these "urban" brands seem to find their niche and remain stagnant.

Phat Farm was never high end urban wear though, neitehr was Enyce, or South Pole, or Fubu

I struck nerve because you never had nice clothes and don't know real street wear

all this stuff was not fly

Southpole will get you clowned, it was knock off First Down coat, the shyt was trash

Karl Kani doesn't fit into their category, he was a legit clothing designer but he faded out in the early 90s along with cross colours, Damage, and stuff like that, like I said its a generational

Pelle Pelle is an urban staple been around forever, still around, coogi is an urban stable been around forever still around, mauri been around forever, still around, this shyt is not cheap the brands you talk about its not on their level

You comparing southpole to Gucci to high end European brands, it's not the same, it's not high end street wear like the companies I named above

Kanye don't even wear the Polo stuff he started out with, he converted into that high end euro shyt nobody fukked with, and he brought that shyt into the culture

Bape and Supreme ain't really hood wear.......that's nerd shyt for whiteboys and rich Asians to cop and wear. It's exclusive and expensive in that it's hard to get a lot of the pieces, but I wouldn't call it hood wear......how many nikkas in your hood you see wearing those corny Bape tees with the ape on it? Or anything Supreme except the suburban nerd culture that think they hood?

Pelle Pelle, Mauri, and Coogi are still legit hood wear. I also remember back in the day Evisu has the illest jeans. Top quality.

Urban clothing has nothing to do with rappers or brands, urban street wear is a legit fashion style that has nothing to do with hip hop, but do with people who live in the city, and its designed for city wear, Hip Hop is the flavor you put on what your wearing, it's how you rock it, that makes it hip hop

yall exposing yourselves you all culture vultures

No logos none of that shyt, this is how real nikkaz dress in the street that's getting money, nikkaz never looked like goofy bums, wore real clothes, nice clothes you had to guy to a nice store to buy this shyt and it was not cheap

This could be Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, or shyt some shyt nobody head of, urban street wear isn't about the brand is about the material and the build quality

all Jay-Z did was take some street wear and added rocawear logo to it, or took an avirex jacket and put rocawear on it, all this shyt existed before any of these rappers

Sean John and Rocawear were the only popular brands ever made by rappers, FUBU was never popular like that only when LL had to sitcom and was too young to know what nikkaz was wearing in the streets for real by time I was in high school FUBU was old and wack, that fat albert shyt was garbage nobody wore that shyt

nikkaz wore Gortex, Rockports, this is street wear shyt made for you to walk around an urban environment and be comfortable

sneakers are tennis shoes not street wear

air ones are sneakers, jordans are fukking basketball shoes
this is called sports wear, like jerseys and track suits

Ecko and Southpole was shyt nikkaz mamas brought him because they couldn't afford sean john and rocawear, which use to be expensive, the only became cheap in the mid 2000s when Puffy and Jay-Z abandoned the shyt and the quality took a nose dive
