Will Smith and FResh prince are 2 different people. Prince had swag. Heck dude beat Mike tyson, took the car while his parents were on vacation and even battled Freddy Kruger. Will Smith was a suburban cat from Bel Air who just happened to rap. .. Miami is the one Will Smith track I love though.

I have no problem with the no cursing, back in the 80s most rappers didnt curse.

But when you get an award and you disrespect some of the legends that did curse...that never sat too well with me

Hip Hop doesn't hate him as much as we hated what he represented for the suits...I mean he won the first grammy for rap while nikkas were boycotting it...not his fault but people just sorta associated him with pop culture. Then he comes out with a show where he's living in a mansion with made the disconnect even more noticeable. Then he was seen more as an actor that did some rapping on the side.

I would say people were more disinterested in him than hating. It woulda been different had he been trying to lord over the game but he just did HIM and people let him have his niche in peace without making too much of a fuss about it either way.

Yeah, they won the first Grammy for rap but Jeff and Will are the ones that started the boycott. They didn't show up to that joint; I forgot who did actually.

Yeah but it's kinda like how people point out how Jackie Robinson was a pioneer but made it to the league more so based on him being a safe sell to white folks than being the best player. There's some resentment there but not necessarily for Jackie himself or his talent. That's how I see Will in Hip Hop..like there was some resentment that he would take center stage over someone like a Rakim but it wont his fault. And he didn't try to flex in a way that made him seem less than humble so nobody 'hated' him for it.

Here's why Will isn't considered a GOAT:

1- Will smith didn't raise the bar in the same way his peers did. Most of his stuff are of the radio-friendly type, or a rehash of what other legends have already done (like those slick rick/rakim examples in the video). That Ice Cube comparison was stupid. He has done way more for the culture than smith ever did, being the brains behind Straight Outta Compton, and where the social commentary in Death Certificate is still very relevant 25 years later.

2- Being from Philly kinda worked against him. It was easier to get recognized and respected if he was riding on the east/west coast coattails at the time. Similar to american politics, it is easier to into public office if you are a dem/repub as opposed to an independent or whatever

3- His body of work....is relatively poor. 1 classic album (which sounds very outdated now), 1 good album, and a whole buncha garbage. You're better off listening to a compilation of his greatest hits than an actual album

Nonetheless, I DO think he should be considered among the greats, due to how crazy he sold, and the many artists that came after who he influenced.

Murs' "breakdown" in this video is disingenuous, and frankly lazy. Kind of insulting to the viewer actually. Just like how former athletes make for poor analysts, Murs further reinforces that stereotype with musicians. Maybe he should stick to making music instead. Oh wait, he hasn't dropped a record worth a damn since 2009. Nevermind! fukk outta here nikka :camby:

Don't know if anybody has ever thought about this but Will's"Girls ain't nothing but trouble" and Big's "I gotta story to tell" are the same song..same premise..different reactions.

Also..they did a Fresh Prince episode that as exactly as the scenario in Girls Trouble song

He's been a vulture for a while, but he was the best plant to ever turn up. He made cacs jump into rap and he made money for a lot of cac down the line.

100% wrong. ..and gonna put you on ignore after I educate you.

Jazzy Jeff was really the star of the group at first. DJs were equal to or more prominent than rappers in some cases and Philly had the best performance DJs in that era. Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money> ANYBODY from that era.

Record label packaged Will in ways that distorted the truth but made him easier to market. There was room for diversity in hip hop back then. You could have a tour with 5 completely different acts, who each brought their fan base to the show.

His rap career is mostly forgettable now.
