Same here, my professor was Jamaican and pushed me so hard. He was tough and made me work hard for that damn class. I really wanted to drop out but he was like a father figure to me especially since there were very little black students and faculty. I struggled with facing that fact that I had to be around whites almost exclusively every single damn day.

Like i think about it and its depressing. Amongst every other race of people the best and brightest are held in the highest regard...when it comes to blacl folks our best qnd brightest are ridiculed, tormented, ostracized for not being "black enough" because i guess intellectualism is something that black folks dont possess, and basically led to be loners and outcasts.

shyt...even look at how damn near every nikka jocking basquiat now cause jay z mentioned him in a verse...guaranteed that dude did not have any sort of black fanbase or following when he was alive. It makes me smh and just at the same time. It usually takes outsiders before black folks recognize greatness amongst our own outside of sports and entertainment and frankly im fukking sick of it.

I read about him a little...it seemed that brownnnosing with the white elite of the art world destroyed him. The more famius he got the more disconnected he became.

I read about him a little...it seemed that brownnnosing with the white elite of the art world destroyed him. The more famius he got the more disconnected he became.

I always find it amazing how these guys, knowing that those people think of them as their little finger-sized lamb, insist on being in their faces until they are used up.

I worked with two non profit organizations when i got out of high school. They were both white, liberal, and whatever adjective to describe yuppies. They were up there with the most condescending people ive ever met. Their ability to talk through you about you and other black people as you stood there, and expected you not to go in their ass then and there is truly amazing. It was 2005 and mothafukkas were trying to hit me with the "you're one of the good ones" line and not expected to be called on it.

Yep...thats Basquiat and his story. Fell victim to drugs and falling victim to obscurity. The art world is a monster. In the 80s it was just on another level especially with new money and yuppies surfacing and they were looking for the next big thng whether it was graffiti artists like Futura 2000 or realist artists like Robert Longo.

Ive actually dealt with those types almost a decade ago when i was still doing painting...i have to rep you cause that description you have of them is so dead on. Its like they had the money the liberal art school education and they could atleast pretend to care about something other than themselves but when it came to black folks their true colors showed out each amd everytime.

These two white women who used to run this gallery back in Pittsburgh (they actually ran it into the ground and its no longer operating) were doing lines of coke with my friends and i invited one of them to check out my paintings. She then went into the disgustingly Privileged diatribe about my art without even understanding anything about african art, street art, or pop art...all of which i was referencing in the art piece in question.

Society has a very narrow way of appreciating us, as black people. And the internalization of said society has caused us to have a very narrow way of appreciating ourselves.

I will say this positive. There is a more vibrant black art scene now probably more than ever. I like the fact that you have so many talented young black men and women that are able to create passionate works that employ things they conmect with. I see it all the time on tumblr. Also from checking out art shows here...they are cultivating their own scene gaining traction without the big name media spotlight. Well...thats mainly due to social media nowadays. I like the contemporary hip hop references in the artworks as well. I feel like there's about to be yet another black creative Renaissance soon.

The original intent of this thread is nothing but wild generalization by the op(whom i do respect). We have always appreciated the things you brought, but just in a different fashion.

Everything you said can be said about every group, you've been surrounded by mostly White artist types for a good portion of your life, so your view is a bit blinkered.

The masses of White folks dont give a damn about innovation or genius either.

I think Black people are very smart. I spoke with Black kids, and these kids grasp things quickly. They aren't dumb at all. Their energy is diverted to nonsense and that is mostly due to various forces operating AGAINST them. I honestly believe if Black kids (or Blacks in general) had a similar situation in terms of society comparable to whites/Asians, Blacks would outperform them. But our parents didn't pick up the ball and get it rolling so...

Depends on the circles you encounter......

In elementary and junior high, I (along with others) was ridiculed for being intelligent.

Parents and I took the initiative to get me around like-minded folks for HS and it was . Nikkas was made fun of for not being smart.

'Til this day (after many years), I still hang out with a good amount of my former classmates.

I feel like we need to big up more black people in engineering, in architecture, in science, in technology, in mathematics, in computer technology/science, in medicine, in chemistry, in the fields that matter...represenatation matters like @PhonZhi says. Black people grow up not seeing themselves in these roles and it becomes limiting to the scope of their own perspective at that time.

Now im not going to shyt on black men and women in sports and entertainment (technically im an entertainer as a dj) especially because those have given many opportunities they wouldnt of had...but in the long run only a few can realistically make it in those fields and the window of opportunity for success is small.
