What is this suppose to mean? I prefer rap to R&B

I’m calling 🧢 for the hundreds of post on here claiming R&B died because people stop going to church or stop being in loves

No, R&B is no longer at the forefront because y’all aren’t listening to it and this started with our generation

I think its an obvious statement that hiphop greatly overtook rnb in terms of popularity. But Sohh and allhiphop was damn near 20 years ago. While we may not have been listening to rnb like that, our parents were. So acting like RNB stopped because they had no fans to appeal to isnt accurate,if thats what your implying.

I believe one black male and a half specefically killed RNB. The first person being R Kelly in my opinion. Obviously this man is the goat of rnb and one of the goat singers. But hes the one I remember most meshing rnb and hiphop. And not only that,as the top rnb singer he started doing that melodic "talk singing/rhyming". This definitely opened the door for alot of non singing ass nikkas to be passable rnb artist. nikkas who shouldve stuck to producing like Dream realized they could be artist too:mjlol:

And the other is of course the premier mulatto known as Drake. He basically took what R Kelly legitimized ,and became a legitimate rnb sensastion. The door was opened even more, and hiphop and rnb became even more meshed.

Also to be frank, while hiphop can exist based on soley ignorant themes. While not having anything poetic about it. The decline in language and poetry, hurts rnb. Because writing is actually important when trying to envoke feelings and emotions. There wouldnt even be an obssession with rhyming the words,if dudes could actually write thoughful lines about love:respect:

His list had a bunch of undercards too, these lists weren’t about longevity or sales, it’s about talent and quality of music.

And SiR is a prime example of one of the few really good millennial male r&b artists…da hell?

Parents didn’t dictate what was popular and where resources would be put 20 years ago. The money and trends follow what the youth are into

all of them are good to me since we cherry picking talent and quality :yeshrug: but that's just me subjectively.... i tend to lean more creativity, alt types than just "sangin" ballads

Like I said to him, great, enjoy…they’re not on par with past talent IMO and the opinions of others - the joys of debating music :manny:

"the opinions of others" if you start actually counting then those it seems like objectively they would be shown by sales lol. which is why i pointed that out. but i think you get the point

Mainstream r&b is now brooding and self depreciating with the similar sounding beats. A lot of it is dope don’t get me wrong but if you want decent spins that’s the route to take.

this seems just like a random meme at this point (right down to the catchphrase "self-deprecating" lol). i pointed out when someone recently compared sza to mary j blige.... mjb was damn near suicidal on tracks. motown was peak crying and begging, etc.... the genre is literally called rhythm AND BLUES for a reason and it's not a recent phenomena lol

we been living rough :yeshrug:

I was referring to pinions in this thread since this is where we’re discussing the topic.

And sales makes no sense to try to compare since sales are down for those guys, part of it is where the industry has been post 06 with lower sales in general, then someone like Drake ain’t selling a bajillion records because of “good r&b” Drake is selling because he’s Drake

Mary had happy joints too though. Older r&b had happy more uptempo joints as well. Now everybody is depressed or sad.

What artists are you talking about that aren't putting out upbeat tracks and over what timespan? Because you can definitely find alot of male millennial happy and or uptempo r&b songs that have been put out over the last 10 years. Because in the 00's you had tracks like

In the 10's you had tracks like

In the 20's so far you have tracks like

And I'm keeping it mainstreamish (I guess Thundercat and Masego aren't mainstream mainstream), it isn't too hard to find this kind of stuff like if we drill into each timeline you can find a bunch of songs you probably rocked with if you're listening to music with an open ear.

Cruisin’
most of these songs posted are 7/10. just ok to pretty good.

i want that shyt that gives you goosebumps when you first hear it. shyt even Weeknd pulled it off with "Wicked Games". GREAT music, not just good or aite. here's a great r&B song from this year

also we millennials and gen z are the children of neoliberalism. R&B is dead because millennials grew up under gynocentrism basically so the women are masculinized and don't like lovey dovey shyt. they want scumbag thug-n-b and slut anthems. We big up mediocre artists because we like the idea that we can be mediocre and still potentially become rich and famous. We grew up in an image based culture so we care more about image/swag than talent. it is what it is.
