....
Of course …

Any group putting Wayne, Kendrick and Drake in their top ten list … over Biggie, Nas and Jay …

And never heard of Wu and A Tribe Called Quest

Who never listened to Soul …

Who never heard instruments live

… tastes like the aforementioned are questionable at best

+

What's the basis for R&B?

Choirs?
School music classes?

I mean if you remove all the places where people learn how to play instruments and learn how to sing, isn't it fair to draw the conclusion that those kids aren't going to grow up knowing how to create original music or perfect a skill like singing?

I mean this doesn't apply to just R&B. It applies to all music, really.
There are no groups now. No bands now. It's just people sampling the samples.

Someone here a long time ago once posted a Rick James clip where I think he hinted at this kind of thing.

Gen X stopped taking Millennials to church …

No church most likely no choir

The Devil really killed R&B

Everyone you named has mainstream presence they have hit records that have features they’re visible within the culture. You don’t have to crossover to white audiences to be a factor anymore
First week sales aren’t the end of be all. It’s not 2005 anymore

You can’t say the same for male R&B

First week sales arent the end all...but Ari, J Sullivan albums are barely going gold. With the exception of Damage, HER's music isnt really doin better

The female acts, while maybe more visible, aren't doin that much better commercially than Giveon, Khalid, Lucky, Brent, Daniel Caesar, Chris...and def not if u include the Weeknd or Bruno

Like I was saying traditional R&B, really blk music, has never been supported and received much mainstream fanfare. Unless watered down. Sales are down for everyone but it's gotten worst because of streaming, radio. The absence of shows like 106&Park as well

But the main reason hip-hop/rap has surpassed r&b in popularity is because it caters to the 25+ and under crowd who are now music's biggest consumers

Don't think it's a generational thing opposed to just the way media is consumed now

You ignoring how the previous generations connected as far as entertainment is concerned. Boomers and Gen x meshed pretty well musically.. Think about how Anita Baker passed the torch to Toni Braxton for instance.. Or how Luther Vandross high jacked Dionne Warwick catalog.. The relationship across the generations changed betwern millennials and gen x.
that's early gen x tho...r kelly could make songs boomers could enjoy, but he was firmly for gen x and millennials, same with mary j blige, erykah badu, donnell jones, and usher, aaliyah, brandy were 100% milennial darlings...the biggest shift is within the millennial generation itself, millennials born 81-87 are just very different than those born 90-96/97

Early millennials got here off R Kelly. So you're right.

The best R&B music was made between the 1960’s and the mid 2000’s

When hip hop was gaining prominence in the late 80’s, that’s when singers and rappers started to experiment for a more urban sound.

The New Jack swing era of the early 90’s birthed most of these melodic singing rappers that would later birth dudes like Ja Rule & Nelly

The neo-soul era of the 2000’s had a great run

What does this have to do with anything, respectfully

This has more to do with radio than anything.

R&B has been dead for over 15 years. I blame the industry, more than the people. All they have to do is sign real artists, hire real R&B producers and market the music to the masses.

There’s no reason for what passes as a R&B should sound goofy (Like Lizzo) or have the same dumb cadence Over a generic trap beat that everyone uses.

Lizzo is pop (and even sometimes gets bagged as a rapper) but she's not r&b. And the whole idea of just sign good talent and put them with writers is outdated. Artists can go straight to the people, the people can choose who is hot or not, and people who'd otherwise be writers are thrusting themselves in the spotlight as artists (been happening since the 00's - ryan leslie, sean garrett, johnta austin, neyo, tank, j valentine, the dream, keri hilson, esther dean...all were writers who wanted to be artists, since then, most folks rather keep their writing for themselves despite being mediocre artists)

As an older millennial I'll go ahead and agree. It pretty much died on our watch. But I will say we weren't given the musical movements or talent level of previous generations. Compare that first wave of stars to the ones of the eras before. We had some good artists but nobody who was hands down great or incredible. On the male side we had Dream, Chris Brown, Ne-yo, Omarion, Miguel, Mario and Trey Songz. None of those guys measure to the superstars that came before them.

Neo-soul artists didn't embrace the earlier millennials.. Gen X with the failure again.
