I know this doesn't apply to all women...and particularly applies to a certain group of woman.

I'm an atheist, but I don't bring up religion in my dealings with women, so it's never really been an issue for me

But I have noticed online, in the media, and in real life that a lot of women are turned off by atheism.

Why? And don't come in with the stereotype about atheists being militant or wanting to force their "beliefs" on others or being obnoxious. That has nothing to do with the lack of belief in God.

My interest lies in answering what's so repulsive about the idea of atheism to women.

The fact that you put "fairy tales" as one of the tags kinda already indicates assholish tendencies towards people's religious beliefs that you're probably not even aware of.

This is one of the reasons why I use Bart Erhman as a source. As probably the biggest skeptic in academia he acknowledges the Gospels as a source.

Not accepting the Gospels would be on the same level as proving you exist without using your birth certificate as evidence.

This is like if I got 7 of my closest friends to write a crazy book full of fairy tales and folklore about our belief in Santa Claus in 2015 while providing no concrete or provable evidence that any of it is true and our descendants generations from now using this book as evidence that Santa Claus indeed existed. It's lunacy to use the bible as a historical reference.

I'm aware that it could offend people...but that's what most religious stories are to me...and to you.

Do you believe in talking snakes? Or goddesses who can turn men into stone? Or frost giants? :sas2:

OP do you feel that youve gotten some answers here in your thread?

I got a lot of bullshyt, as was expected. But a few things did stand out.

1. Some women connect their entire purpose in life with the existence of a higher power. I think their beliefs keep them from having an existential crisis, and so naturally they'd want a mate who would reinforce that defense mechanism instead of weakening it

2. Some women believe that there is no standard of morality without God, and so any man who doesn't believe in God must therefore be immoral.

I question the logic of both stances, but especially the second one. For example, if I, being an atheist, cheat on my mate, I can't blame the Devil or demons, I can only blame myself. If I do wrong by her, I can't expect some god to forgive my sins.

Also, I often wonder, if a religious person discovered that their beliefs were undeniably wrong, would they suddenly become a murderer, rapist, liar, cheater etc.? If so, how could they ever consider themselves to be good people? If your morality is entirely based on something so flimsy (IMO), then what does that say about you? :francis:

Nothing thus far in Archeology disproves locations of cities, town, villages and even people described in the Gospels let alone the rest of the Bible. Therefore there should be no reason they should be excluded.

Of course you are. I was just giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming that you may have done it unintentionally, even though most atheists do intend to offend.

The issue is not atheism. The issue is being a condescending a$$hole about it. And almost every single atheist in this thread confirmed that.

I wasn't intending to offend, that's just how I feel about most religious stories.

I was aware of the potential to offend.

However I find people looking down on others for not believing in something that there is no evidence for to be highly offensive. There are many examples of that in this thread on the part of believers.

You may say you're not judging, but when you disqualify a person from being a potential mate on that basis, all other things being equal, you actually are.

I love how young Christians don't understand why atheists tone towards them is so disrespectful. It's about context, people.

I'm totally willing to respect an old black person who grew up in a parochial society with little access to information and Jim crow restrictions. I get it.

But some chick who has had Internet access her whole adolescent and adult life!?!? :mindblown::mjlol: I don't even know how brehs
