Why in the black community we sometimes struggle with having healthy conversations about obesity?

Its actually 80%.

It doesn't help that black women choose to rock hairstyles that are incompatible with physical activity
It’s actually 48%.
If a black woman does exercise, a hairstyle is not going to prevent her from doing so. Black women do rock ponytails and buns or like most - put a headband on to keep hair from the face or sweating. Your personal observations are not reality. Can you post the resource of where you obtained that 80% statistic?
I do agree that heath considerations, nutrition and diet concerns need to be addressed.

I often wonder the same when I read some things on here.

I can appreciate brehs like a woman who has meat on her bones and looks durable, but there seems to be something in our culture which is encouraging sisters to overdo this perhaps.

Because I'm not gay, I obviously won't see a very shapely and meaty lady like a man would, but when I see a lady who is very big, I do wonder about her health...this also includes the ladies who are not necessarily overweight but who are having modifications done to their body to create these abnormal proportions.

The older I get, I realize health is really the thing we ought to prioritize over all others because it literally affects our ability and the quality of opportunities related to our ability to interact with the world. Many things we experience and produce in our life is, to a high degree, a consequence of our level of health.

I'm still holding extra weight from my last pregnancy a few years ago and I'm now having health issues I had never experienced prior during any point in my life, and I wasn't heavy before. So, I can't imagine how the ladies who are shouldering way more pounds are managing on the daily with simple stuff we take for granted like walking or breathing comfortably. I imagine you get used to it but it might make you feel restricted in your skin.

Also, my prior time in the military often makes me think in a 'readiness' mode, and sometimes my initial thoughts when I see sisters who look hampered by their weight is if some SHTF fukkery popped off unexpectedly either in their home, community or, hell, even this country, they would not have the basic ability to run from it, literally. Every time I see a twerk video, whether the dancer is large or small, I'm wondering if the lady has the same physical endurance to run for her life over a notable distance if she had to...

It's not just them though; it, again, may be a societal issue. Subconsciously, many of us are operating maybe sonambulistically, as if something random could not happen to bring daily life as we know to a halt.

Investment in looking good versus being healthy seems to be something which can only exist within the confines of human civilization because, in nature, the creatures and organisms which are not physically well do not survive. A lot of our human lives seem to be fashioned to make us think we exist outside of this natural law...:yeshrug:

I agree, but when I started to get back in the gym heavily these last few months and already made significant improvements like running for 12 laps straight (3 miles) and lifting iron, I often wonder why people feel comfortable not being able to run for one city block without feeling winded and exhausted, and be cool about it. Being excessively heavy over the age of 30 ain't cool at all, and too many black folk be on that :manny: attitude when it comes to losing weight.

50%, 65%, 80%. Regardless it's too high. Yet you got posters saying we don't have access to food.

If we had no access to food we wouldn't be obese
The saltier, sweet and more fatty foods are easier to access and cheaper especially when coupled with the fact that fast food is more easily accessible and people eating out while not preparing home cooked meals as much.

lmao you need to disassociate over weight and obese.

Look at the first 4 bullet points of your own link

"
  • African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other groups in the U.S. About four out of five African American women are overweight or obese.
  • In 2015, African Americans were 1.4 times as likely to be obese as non- Hispanic whites.
  • In 2015, African American women were 60 percent more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white women.
  • In 2011-2014, African American girls were 50% more likely to be overweight than non-Hispanic white girls."
Someone like me. 6'3 225 Excercises 5 days a week is considered "overweight". However no matter how fit you are Obese is obese and no fit person can pass that threshold less they be actually obese

While many black men fit or otherwise are overweight. The majority of us are NOT obese. The same can not be said of our sisters. Those stats you gave lump overweight and obese together as if they're the same.

Because it's alright to be overweight as long as you're thick in the right places

There isnt enough emphasis on health collectively, we over season our foods and I think we do a lot of stress eating

We value comfort over long term health

I dont mean to overly generalize but on the surface level these are the issues

Baked and grilled chicken isn't hard to gain access to.

Fast food is also way more expensive. McDonald's costs $12 all day long whereas my home cooked meals are $5/day on average

I think addressing our obesity means we have to openly admit that there's a problem with our cultural eating habits, and a lot of us ain't about to do that

we crack jokes about white people eating shyt like hummus and couscous, but i mean :manny:
Jokes is just jokes

And in reality only rich(upper mid class) whites have those habits

The avg do not and r having obese problems

Breh, you do know that those chicken thighs are cheap for a reason right? Preservatives and other unnatural chemicals are pumped into that meat.

And again, you got parents trying to feed kids. Ain't nobody eating oatmeal every day.

You're basically expecting everyone to eat like robots. Sugary/carb based foods are also addictive. You can't go cold Turkey.

Even if they put a whole foods in a random good spot, people probably wouldn't go. The damage has already been done. People have been conditioned to eat a certain what for generations.

No theyre cheap because everybody would rather have chicken breasts. You think whites eating 100% organic meat? No they ain't. They eating the same shyt. Whites ain't spending money on organic food like that. They eat worse than use sometimes which is why they obese

Chicken breasts are also cheap, so regardless you can still get those and eat right.

If you're addicted to salt or sugar, that's on you. It's either your health or death. Choose 1

What kills me is that the nation is on more medication than ever before. Yet we have worse mental health and worse physical health than ever before.:francis: We're living longer, though.:ehh:

I don't trust a doctor who is too quick to push meds....:unimpressed:

You do know about food deserts right..
And these services you talk about..
Are not cheap..
Especially if you are a single father/mother..
Working two jobs just for necessities..
Couple the fact that grocery stores in the hood..
Don’t always have the freshest produce..
There have been articles and studies published on this..
And they do not build Trader Joe’s/Sprouts/Whole Foods/Aldis...
Anywhere near these neighborhoods unless it’s time to gentrify..
Organic fruits/vegetables are ridiculously overpriced..
This post is filled with sanctimony instead of looking at the root of the issue..
And this is coming from a former fight nikka..
Obesity is not always about the food you eat..
It’s your mind set..
Past traumas..
Stress..
Access..
Education on nutrition..
The way this post tries to simplify it as “excuses like..
Shows a lot of you dumb-smart nikkas..
Have no real world comprehension..
And just get on here to spout garbage..
For circle jerk, echo chamber..
Pats on the back..
If the world was as simple as this garbage post..
Don’t you think people would choose being healthy over being unhealthy..
Get your juelzing rebuttal and daps on tho:salute:
This is one great post....

Chicken is not as healthy as you think. It’s a known fact that chickens are injected with steroids, growth hormones other chemical addictives which in turn, is passed over to people eating. Baked or grilled - doesn’t matter if the chicken source is not farmer owned or maintained as certified organic. How many organic food spots do you know in the hood?? You don’t think there’s a link between causal factors of the obesity epidemic and how foods are processed. Note the coorelation -

And I don’t know where you shop that people can get a whole meal for a family at $5 per meal and McDonald’s is $12. It’s the opposite.out where I’m at, you can get 2 pizzas for $15.

It's hilarious how brehs try to say chicken being filled with GMOs and additives yet will go to fast-food restaurants quick ass hell
What about those who rarely eat fast food?? No one is messing with McDonald’s or Wendy’s where I am bc the food just tastes nasty, period when you can go to a Jamaican, Ethiopian, halal, or Latin food spot where they import most of their products and prepare it fresh. They don’t even use American chicken- you can tell the difference. You can chill with all the generalizations bc people eat fast food bc it’s convenient or time constraints. Obese people can turn the healthiest meal into a bad one bc of overconsumption or overindulgence and adding extras (butter, oil, salt etc).
