Why is pop/catchy music frowned upon in hip-hop/R&B?

Popular Culture

noun
1.
cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people.

Hip Hop

A name for the 4 elements of the late 70's New York City renaissance which includes break dancing, emceeing, (rapping) graffiti, and turntablism.

Rap is something you do Hip Hop is something you live- KRS One

A culture and form of ground breaking music and self expression with elements that consisted of the elements of graffiti art, DJing, MCing, and breaking. Today Hip-Hop is considered to be dead in the mainstream because so-called mainstream Hip-Hop doesn't have the elements of hip-hop and have no meaning.

Hip Hop is not pop.

The real answer is this. Hip Hop is SUPPOSED to be about originality (don't lump R&B in with hip-hop b/c they're both dominated by black people). You're supposed to write your own lyrics, the person who's getting credit for the beat is supposed to be the one making the beat etc. etc.

So when you have microwave music, written (or inspired) by non hip hop people, for hip hop people, we frown upon it.

Whitney and MJ had undeniable legendary talent though. Thats the thing back in the days the pop artists actually had talent. Nowadays nikkas can't even single well

the fukked up thing about that is...thats what weve been lead to believe..but from jumpstreet, hiphop was based off nikkas looping other people's songs and rapping lyrics that other nikkas wrote...the first rap song and iconic joints that followed it where ghostwritten and rapped over disco breakbeats....so when the curtain get pulled back we all :dwillhuh:..but its been in our face from the beginning :francis:

what part doesn't make sense? trust me, if someone else sung drunk in love, it wouldn't get that type of hate
You may be dense

The only people that dislike Drunk in love are the losers that take music too seriously and think everything has to be the height of artistic creation in order for it to be listenable

And I was just posing a hypothetical

but sampling was a huge part of hip hop. doesnt that take the originality component out the window.?

If Drunk in love is hated on, it's because it's Beyonce singing it. Trust me, if someone else sung that song meaning a true r and b artist, it wouldn't be hated on. People like the underdog, the unsigned or underground artist. Remember when Wiz first came out, he had his day 1 fanbase and his music was on point. He got signed and imo, just hasn't been the same.

wiz khalifa was signed the entire time, and that's not the first time he tried to come out either.

he was the one that kicked off the industry plant era. he was always fraud,

Whitney Houston & Micheal Jackson made pop/catchy music and no one hated on them for it.

whitney Houston was once the most-hated face of sellout music, to the point where she got booed at the soul train awards and had to switch her style up.

when Michael Jackson became the king of pop that people worship on here, the majority of his O.G. fanbase was gone.

beyonce gets hated on all the time breh. and sometimes rightfully so.

well rihanna was always a non-singing pop artist with a Caribbean twist from day one. gotta give her props for creating a new lane, but talent-wise, ive never seen a respectable music fan that takes her seriously.

if its rapper's delight that youre referring to, the only person in that group who didn't write was big bank hank., and iirc, the rest of the group didn't even catch on to what he was doing until they were in the studio with him recording other songs.

they didn't even know each other beforehand. sugar hill records put them together. none of them were known in the rap circuit before they blew up on the radio. hank was delivering pizzas or some chit while moonlighting as grandmaster caz manager. and he didn't break bread with caz over them bars.

Is this a legit question?

Go listen to the sample for Mass Appeal (a song by Gangstarr), then listen to the final beat.
