People like the underdog, the unsigned or underground artist. Remember when Wiz first came out, he had his day 1 fanbase and his music was on point. He got signed and imo, just hasn't been the same.

if its rapper's delight that youre referring to, the only person in that group who didn't write was big bank hank., and iirc, the rest of the group didn't even catch on to what he was doing until they were in the studio with him recording other songs.
they didn't even know each other beforehand. sugar hill records put them together. none of them were known in the rap circuit before they blew up on the radio. hank was delivering pizzas or some chit while moonlighting as grandmaster caz manager. and he didn't break bread with caz over them bars.
