The 215
Redskin is an offensive term, the degree of which would depend on individual sensitivity; however, it is not a slur. A better comparison would be if washington were called the Brownskins, with an accompanying logo that referenced an African. In no way should redskins be equated with niqqer, or to a lesser extent wetbacks, which are deeply injurious and disgusting slurs.

While I appreciate the idea that black folks should be more sensitive to the claims of other groups who feel offended by a racially insensitive term or slur, the fact that this writer focused exclusively on black and brown folks, and didnt include the group who created the logo and name, and are the loudest defenders of it, is intellectual dishonesty at best. I would label it as cowardice.
They pull this sucker shyt cause they feel as though they can get away with it. If we shut these dopes down when not calling out other groups they would start to think about it and dude that wrote the article is black too from what I saw on here even makes me more madder. Who you tyring to get pat on the head by clown.

I really wish they would change the team name to something more tasteful. They can keep the Native American vibe but with respect.

You gotta love it. So because we did some protests and a couple of people got shot and beat up for a cup of coffee in the 60's we're supposed to fight everybody else's battles too?

You gotta love it. We're still battling high unemployment, disproportionate incarceration figures, crime and new forms of gentrification but we'll go ahead and solve the sports team problem and pass the homo bill in California in the process

most 3rd graders know this

many indigenous peoples of this country call themselves indians nowadays

Washington, DC | National Museum of the American Indian

still Ignorant and is a reflection of the Ignorance in this country. everywhere else in the world they call them By their tribe's name. is just a way to lump them in as a group so they appear populous. they got massacred and brainwashed into calling themselves Indians.

:usure:

in much of the world they're called "red indians", actually. does that not offend you? :lupe:

you think people from other countries are aware of the thousands of indigenous tribe names that exist solely on this continent? :beli: that's a fukking joke

it's a name many have chosen to use, obviously regardless of circumstances. on a 1-1 level, they will often use their tribe name, but as a denomination, they often use the term "indian". who are you to tell them that's ignorant? how condescending do you have to be, exactly, to say they've been brainwashed into using a term to describe themselves?

here is a small example First Nations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

explain to me how that proves your point though?

i taught a class on native american history to people from asian and arabic countries, most of whom were college educated, and half of them never knew these peoples existed, and if they did, they called them "red indians" and said that was the proper term they had been taught.

Canada uses the term First Nations, which I prefer to anything we use, but again, if the people in question here use the term, i'm not going to tell them what to call themselves. but even that term doesn't go as far as you previously claimed, which is that the rest of the world calls them by their tribe's specific name (which, were sometimes given to them by europeans mind you - "sioux" and "nez perce" are not words borne of the local language, although sioux is an abbreviation of a loan-word...of a dialect of a european language - point being, your idea is nice but way too convoluted to be executed as some sort of ritual of respect for culture)

500 years ago is irrelevant. 100 years ago nobody called themselves "italian" or "spanish" (this is still in question today in Spain tbf), are those titles irrelevant or ignorant?

People always want us to stick up for their race, but those same victims get quiet on our issues.

Out here in my damn drawls
Fucc this dude that wrote this article! :pacspit: Why did he have to shyt on black folks to prove his point? :mindblown: Black folks don't have anything to do with this issue. I do agree with the people and understand that the Redskin name is offensive to Native Americans. I totally get that. But for this dude to take issue with black folks because we ain't as vocal protesting against the "redskins" name and organization is total bullshyt.

Where were Native Americans when Black folks were gettin their heads bashed in, dogs sicked on them, gettin lynched, beat up by police, couldnt drink from fountains? Native Americans we're not out in the streets marchin with black folks fightin for civil rights.

If this dude that wrote this column has issue with the name Redskin, then fine. But don't start bringin up a slur on black folks to support his position :pacspit:

I got into it with somebody not too long ago for some sh!t like this. Dude was like, "I don't know how any black minority could be against the civil rights for anyone, especially gays. If they are, they're ignorant."

I'm like :what:. Just because someone is a "minority" doesn't mean we can't form our opinions and we don't have to be ride or die with everything

When it comes to gay rights, I'm like :manny: why not, it's none of the government's business, but I didn't want to give ol' boy the satisfaction of knowing my position because he was so smug :beli:
