i taught a class on native american history to people from asian and arabic countries, most of whom were college educated, and half of them never knew these peoples existed, and if they did, they called them "red indians" and said that was the proper term they had been taught.

Canada uses the term First Nations, which I prefer to anything we use, but again, if the people in question here use the term, i'm not going to tell them what to call themselves. but even that term doesn't go as far as you previously claimed, which is that the rest of the world calls them by their tribe's specific name (which, were sometimes given to them by europeans mind you - "sioux" and "nez perce" are not words borne of the local language, although sioux is an abbreviation of a loan-word...of a dialect of a european language - point being, your idea is nice but way too convoluted to be executed as some sort of ritual of respect for culture)

500 years ago is irrelevant. 100 years ago nobody called themselves "italian" or "spanish" (this is still in question today in Spain tbf), are those titles irrelevant or ignorant?

Spanish is a language. they are called Spaniards. you're showing your ignorance right there. you're talking about a country outside the U.S but use a colloquial ethnic term only used in this country thus proving my original point of American Racial Ignorance. you set those poor people back 500 yrs.

I actually been to Spain several times actually lived/worked there for a while . and Have family/friends/ former teammates In Barcelona,Madrid,and Valladolid. if you want to piss of a Spaniard call one a Moor.
