Would it be fair to say Pop Smoke was more important to NYC rap than Big L?

Big L would be fighting for the same steak as Kiss, Banks & Fab if he lived.

That type of rap has merit and all them guys are very talented but he wasn’t exactly Rakim, Jay, Big, Nas, Prime Prodigy levels of imagery, dexterity or flow

When did you start listening and becoming cognitive.

As i know you were not there for yes you may, represent or devil son. Or any of the admin delays to big l or jeru in that time.

As this comparison is silly because it tries to conflate a cultural timeline. Without any idea about hiphop culture or even diggin in the crate.
Monetary success and permearuon commercially for rhe era big l was in culturally in hiphop. Were not judged by the pop semantics that pop smoke existed in.

Hiphop was not even in a pop chart jiggy context culturally. When big l was alive and debuted.

Absolutely not. Him being more popular and garnering more popularity due to his death doesnt make him more IMPORTANT to hip hop. Yall confusing notoriety with significance.

The sad part about this thread is that we are witnessing the future writers on books about hip hop history right before our eyes. And that itself shows what is in store for the future. If you would even put Pop Smoke in a cypher with someone like Stan Spit, he'd still get embarrassed and yall are comparing this guy to Big L????

When I walk in the spot, thirty on me
Buy out the club, nikkas know that I'm paid
bytch, I'm a thot (Uh), get me lit
I can't fukk with these nikkas 'cause nikkas is gay
All on my page suckin' dikk
All in my comments and screamin' my name

This is the shyt yall trying to convince me is legendary??? I don't know what the fuk they putting in the weed today, but yall need to stop smoking that shyt.

Love L, but Big L died as an underground rapper, Pop Smoke died as a star. Death elevated both of them, but Pop Smoke's trajectory was already set.
So by those standards, that would make Rod Wave a better rapper than G Rap and Rakim right?

thecoli.com is not very good at a&r-ing
it took actual mainstream success for thecoli to finally recognize the likes of sza, glorilla, etc.

that being said as a more reasonable person, i never really got into either.
i'll say big L because i hear the peers speak on him more. they would know better
people say pop smoke was having a moment or whatever but so is A Boogie With A Hoodie (got like 50 platinum and gold records) and nobody cares.

yeah i enjoyed pops music because of his voice and presence. it was menacing as hell... but he was doodoo lyrically. didnt have a whole lot to say

basically style over substance, but i saw him as mainstream so that was ok :yeshrug:

They still making documentaries about Big L.... even Jay Z had to be apart of it... no disrespect to Pop Smoke, nobody has talked about him in years
