Xbox One and Xbox 360 revenues were down 24 percent year over year during Microsoft’s fiscal third quarter, the company reported today.
They went from selling a console at only a $500 price point to bundling games and selling it at $350. Obviously revenue is gonna be down.
If they fall, another will take their place. It always does.
Doubtful. Microsoft has been in this game since 2001 and their brand that they nourished for over a decade can't stand on it's own. The only way a company breaks into this business is when the company of top fukks up and gives up market share to them.

The market itself doesn't need 2 separate HD consoles. Some sensible gamers might like the competition but the market wants to converge on a single platform. That's why there's almost always a huge gap in sales between number 1 and number 2 in sales.

I hear you but the shareholders don't even care enough about the gaming divison. I see them trying to start their own steam like service on the PC and xb1 though

If Microsoft drops out Sony will become an effective console monopoly. Nintendo isn't a alternative to Sony. If in over a decade Microsoft couldn't get Xbox to a comfortable level no other company is gonna be eager to step into the console market after watching all the money Microsoft threw at this to no avail.

If that were the case, the console space would've been taken over by other opportunists like Apple, Amazon, etc. the reality is the market for gaming consoles is an incredibly small market that, compared o smartphones and tablets, isn't an attractive venue to enter. Why did you think Panasonic/Samsung entered the gaming industry in the 90s?

Nintendo will always be around, no doubt, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're the only ones standing along with PC gaming.

The PS Brand is too much part of Sony now and they won't make the same mistakes like they did with the PS3 going forward. It'll be Nintendo, PC, and Sony.

Steambox can do it IMO.

Not always true.

Last gen was the most even we saw with the Wii, PS3, and 360.

Before that it was SNES and Genesis.

I still wouldn't count out Nintendo. I doubt 4K will be standard for the gen after this, but 1080p/60 will be standard (should have been this gen).

Nintendo can EASILY get an 1080p/60fps machine made at a reasonable price for the gen after this in a few years.

and If they get it together..... :lupe:

Not really. The global market never really embraced the Xbox. In the US it was embraced but you see how quickly that lasted. In the end for the Xbox to remain relevant Microsoft had to outsell Sony here by a huge amount to make up for what they weren't selling elsewhere.

Microsoft did what all these companies try to do. Sell a lot of units and try to dictate to the market where things go in the next cycle. Sony attempted to do the same with the PS3 and Blu-Ray at $600. Nintendo tried to do it with cartridges back when everyone wanted CDs.

This humble Sony will only last so long and only exist because they got hammered last console generation. When Microsoft drops out and Sony becomes the defacto home gaming console with no real alternative we'll see how much people love them then.

Like them or not Microsoft did a lot for this business. In fact it was their vision that ended up defined the home console experience we have right now. Nintendo ID, PSN ID, those came from the Gamertag. Sony was happy to leave online as an option and let developers handle it individually meaning no unified name across all games. PSN was a response to Xbox Live and mostly copied it's features. We all remember the PS2's system OS and how barebones it was. Sony didn't care about all this added functionality in a home console until Microsoft started adding it in.

I'm willing to bet if Microsoft hadn't stepped in and created Xbox Live's unified service all the publishers like EA and Ubisoft would charge for separate accounts for their games. so your EA account you pay EA an annual fee for lets you play EA games online and so forth.

Steam already exist. It has no real appeal outside of the PC gamers that already use it. You can't really dumb PC gaming down to a console level. It's still PC gaming with drivers and different specs and different end user experiences depending on what hardware you buy.

There are also already Steamboxes in the wild. You can get an Alienware Alpha at Walmart. It didn't light the world on fire.

But it's not being pushed. The potential is there and the investment to get a solid steambox to run 1080p/60 for the gen after this won't be much since 4K/60 is just not happening and TVs have jumped from 1080p to 4K, with no inbetween.

to get a PC running at 1080p/60 locked you're looking at close to $800 and to put it in a tine Steambox it's gonna be more. People don't wanna pay that type of money.

Steamboxe would have worked if there was one SKU and one Steambox with set specs. Maybe then it could have been marketed to the masses. Instead there are tons of them all with different cases and specs. Too confusing. Its only gonna appeal to mostly current PC gamers that want a TV setup with a tiny box and even then that's only the people too lazy to build their own Mini ITX system.

There's not a single Steambox cheaper than the PS4 that can get the same quality.

Steambox is simply an alternative, it's not a competitor to the console market at all.

I'm not saying now, I'm saying NEXT gen. Not this current gen.

Like I said they did it to themselves when they spit in the face of the core gamers.
:heh: instead of learning from Sonys mistakes they should have said let's not piss off the people who buy our shyt let's give them a strong console for cheap and we will win them over with good will. But like you said they tried to dictate the market horribly and shyt backfired badly. They lost a lot of goodwill and is a laughing stock.

Meanwhile Sony said shyt were not gonna follow that example and be more gamer friendly. There's nothing wrong with giving the people what they want but Microsoft was dead wrong trying to shove all that DRM shyt down peoples throats and expect them to forgive it like it never happened. :heh:

Bluray was the right decision though in the PS3. It killed them at the beginning, but it ultimately was the right decision IMO and it showed. We needed a bigger storage medium than DVD.

Gamertag idea came from Steam. Even the service of Live was technically. All Steam and Sega Channel to an extent. MS vision my ass. :camby:

Because of them mufukkaz, we had to start paying for online multiplayer and because of their decision to use DVDs in the 360 we got this DLC nonsense started. While Live did bring some good things to the table, paying for online multi when most games are peer to peer is a fukking joke that we are stuck with now. Live by itself should have been a perk of having an Xbox.

If they go down, :manny:

Tough break for em, but  for em.
