I'm mainly referring to the extremely high and persistent rates of poverty, and alcoholism which are much higher than in the african-american community.

The alcoholism of Amerindians is unique, because of how their bodies metabolize alcohol -- or many foods, really -- differently from Euros and Africans. You know how Euros are the least likely to be lactose intolerant, and everyone else is screwed, but Euros were telling everybody they NEEDED to have a certain amount of dairy in their diet just because Euros were used to it? Some things can't be addressed in the same way as alcoholism in Euros and Africans because of Amerindians unique genetic structure. But yes, it is a serious problem. More opportunities is the solution. Opportunities are being artificially lowered, in my opinion, for Amerindians, though. Remove the barrier, you remove the need to drink just to have something to do.

My personal opinion is that the poverty rate of Amerindians is artificially maintained by the federal government and sovereign governments. Some of that artificial maintenance is 'good', since it prevents abuse of the land such as mindless industrial and housing development. Some of it, obviously, is 'bad'. The Amerindians who post here will have more intelligent opinions and facts about that than me, though, since each nation's situation is different, especially depending upon whether they're east or west of the Mississippi.

All that 'worthless' land whites thought they were offloading on Amerindians decades ago is looking sweeter and sweeter each day. As long as Amerindians don't sell out to the Feds and to Asians, they're going to end up in a pretty sweet place. Nikkas, are still going to be nikkas. That's the long game, in my opinion. I'm not feeling sorry for Amerindians, at all. I envy them.

Only one tribe has actively opposed the name, the Oneida tribe. And polls have shown that most Native Americans don't even consider this a pressing issue.

These schools and teams were named by cacs back when it was acceptable for them to toss racial terms around like its nothing. Redskins is what the white man used to call native Americans

No. Redskin was the name that the tribes would use. And the Native American high schools that still use the Redskin name adopted the name themselves.

there is no justification for the continued use of the term.

So why are Native Americans still using the name for buildings and high school teams? And even if white people attached the name to their stuff, they could have changed it by now but they haven't.

Other tribes do care about this strongly.

Even though most polls show that they don't care.

They just don't have the voice that the tribe fighting this issue .

However, some white people who want to all of a sudden do something "noble" for the Native Americans by fighting the "Redskin" name is what doesn't sit well with me. Instead of helping fix their far greater problems (which those same white people are largely responsible for creating), they'd rather do something ineffective like help them change the name of some football team.

However, there remain 62 high schools in the United States that continue to use the redskins name. Three of these have a majority of Native American students: Red Mesa High School (Arizona), Wellpinit High School Wellpinit, Washington and Kingston High School Kingston, Oklahoma.[35] In 2000 James S. Rickards High School changed its name from the Rickards Redskins to Rickards Raiders due to perceivedracial implications of the word. In December, 2013 the Houston, TX school district approved, in a preliminary vote, a new policy against any ethic mascots which would require a change for several schools including the Lamar High School Redskins.[47][48]
