your acting like you still can't join them...

some certs only take 3 months and will have you starting at 70k.....

unless you have a criminal record you're good to go, you can always do your own business, but its good to have a steady income

you got 0 excuses not to go for it, or you can continue wasting your time posting on tha Coli all day, which you will get nothing out of
Which certs only take 3 months and where do i take cleasses at? Online?

Reading is fundamental. I said it's easier to get an entry level position with a college degree. Now if you have experience, then a degree matters less especially for "technical" IT position.

But if you walk into an IT shop right now or a consulting firm, most people will have a college degree. The higher up you go in the company, the more people will have a college degree or higher.

This is just a fact. I do campus recruiting and interview people for my company.

Breh, that's just you're company. When I look at entry level positions for all the companies I've worked for, none of them required a degree. A cert or two, sure. 1-2 years exp, absolutely. But never a degree. I can start posting job descriptions if you want....

bruh those are management consulting firms. they don't really focus on IT unless the project requires them to, and I could see that during the interview process. I turned down offers from both Deloitte & Accenture. Didn't like the pretentious culture or payscale. I remember my final interview was with some george bush looking clown who looked like he sold his soul just to make 'partner' status. whole thing just seemed wack to me.

If I'm a CTO or IT director at a company and I need some direction on my company's network infrastructure, I'm for damn sure calling a Cisco, Microsoft, WWT, or Dimension Data before I call a Deloitte/Accenture/PwC, etc. If I need help with my overall business strategy, then I'd call one of those guys you talking about

Yeah, I was wondering why dude kept bringing up auditing firms.

You are only going so far in IT without a degree. A lot of doors will be closed off if your are trying to move up the ladder. That's not to say you cant eat well. Cause their are a lot of jobs out there right now. But if your trying to get into the business, management, and strategy side of IT then a degree is definitely a must. Everyone isn't trying to be a contractor and jumping around temp gigs or be a tech. Relevant Degree + Experience is always better than just experience alone.

I see people type this but I personally haven't seen any doors closed on me because of my degree. I have had doors closed because of my race, but that's another topic.

The only door that might be closed would be management positions but I get hit up for management roles all the time. I've been hired at architect level positions multiple times over my career and even made it to $100/hr without degree so I'm not sure what doors have been closed.

I provide strategy aligning business and technology for fortune 20 companies of microsoft

But I was a consultant for abt 8 years at Microsoft prior to becoming a strategy architect here

How do you like working for MS? One of their recruiters hit me like last month for some position but I have no desire to work for them. Seems like it would be an annoying place to work for some reason.

To be honest, complacency. That is a character flaw that I can admit. I am also tied up in my business that I run outside of work, so I am drained after 17-hour days man.

You doing the right thing breh. I cut back on a lot to focus on my business stuff as well. I told myself by next year I want to completely be out of IT for good.

Can't fukking wait :banderas:

Like @Nigerianwonder said, you are more the exception than the rule. You can look at any company's job site and most of the postings for entry level jobs will require a degree. This is just a fact. This is why going to college is pushed so much in this country. Arguing otherwise is just disenginious.....Regardless of how much antectdotal evidence you present.

I get it that not graduating college worked out for you, but stop with the college bashing because the route you took may not work most people.

You haven't seen doors closed cause I'm sure you are smart enough not to apply to the jobs that say a degree is required. Otherwise your resume will get filtered to the trash can. There are companies and jobs in IT you simply cannot apply for. it is what it is.

I'm happy you have been able to make your situation work for you though. And If you made 100 per hour without a degree then congrats to you. You are the exception. Not the rule. Once you get into 100k plus you are looking at senior level positions and more times than not they want a degree to go with that experience. The jobs that pay like that also require years of highly specialized experience. Not someone with a few years of help desk experience and a couple certs. You guys need to stop selling people this pipe dream that people are better off by skipping formal education or that there is some easy way to jump into high paying jobs and professions. There is no shortcut.

No, almost every job in it says bachelors degree or equivalent experience

I'd love for you to show me the high level jobs where it doesn't say that

It is one if the only careers where you can advance very quickly w/o formal education

This is not to say your learning ends when you get the job, it is also one of the only career field where you are constantly learning new shyt
