@bdizzle do IT jobs generally drug test and do they allow you to move frequently? (ie: could you move almost anywhere and still find employment?)

It depends. If you're being directly hired perm by a company, you'll likely have to get a drug test. Also, a lot of recruiting agencies will require drug tests as well. However, I currently contract at a fortune 100 in ATL and wasn't required to do a drug test.

I don't know if I understand the last part of your question but if you're good, you'll have work on any part of the globe.

I did the same shyt...I got my associates, then my a+ and net+ that summer/fall. That helped me get a help desk gig while going to school. Im in school learning a bunch of shyt i didnt care for, accumulating debt while i wanted to work. I knew shyt was a waste of time and draining me. Said fukk it and i aint look back since :blessed: Only regret is not going harder for more at the time and starting earlier.

Same for me. If I could go back in time I would have skipped college altogether. I was studying on my own and no BS I literally learned nothing in 5 years of my BS program. I learned more in taking the CCNA exam than I do in a 5 year degree program that focused on networking :francis:

Yall need to start telling cats to post those receipts if they want to give advice :WhatevaNikka:. If that check stub ain't matching their talk, go head and give them the :camby:

nikkas gonna get they feelings hurt if you start doing that :mjpls:

So you're worried about drug tests and you gotta always be on the move :jbhmm:

My nikka gonna be moving work in help desk :wow:

A company didn't require a drug test :dwillhuh:? I thought that shyt was required by law.

I've always had to do one, never really thought it was an option :ohhh:

Nope it's definitely not required by law. And I work at the global headquarters in Sandy Springs for this fortune 100.

You haven't seen doors closed cause I'm sure you are smart enough not to apply to the jobs that say a degree is required. Otherwise your resume will get filtered to the trash can. There are companies and jobs in IT you simply cannot apply for. it is what it is.

Breh, I don't apply for jobs :mjlol:. I haven't had to apply for a job in like 4-5 years.

I'm happy you have been able to make your situation work for you though. And If you made 100 per hour without a degree then congrats to you. You are the exception. Not the rule. Once you get into 100k plus you are looking at senior level positions and more times than not they want a degree to go with that experience.

Breh, I'm sorry to disappoint you but you're wrong :heh:. They don't require a degree. The job descriptions always say the same thing. Bachelors or relevant experience. Masters or relevant experience. And the jobs that typically don't require a degree are the entry level jobs like help desk.

I get hundreds of these emails breh. Every week. And I post them in the IT careers thread so dudes can see what they should be learning if they want to hit 70+/hr.

The jobs that pay like that also require years of highly specialized experience. Not someone with a few years of help desk experience and a couple certs. You guys need to stop selling people this pipe dream that people are better off by skipping formal education or that there is some easy way to jump into high paying jobs and professions. There is no shortcut.

Of course they require specialized experience. Nobody is denying that. But you don't need a degree to get that experience. And the only person telling nikkas to pass a cert and make 70k was @Xtraz2.

And :mjlol: at selling pipe dreams. You know how many people from the IT thread alone has hit me up to say thanks cause they followed my advice and now they're making more than ever. shyt I got two homeboys who just in the last year hit 100k cause I told em what to do.

Will a degree help? Absolutely. Is it required? Absolutely not.

IT is the best field to be in as it offers plenty of opportunities. Currently working as a Clinical System Analyst in a hospital and the pay/potential pay is good can't complain. You don't need a degree in IT just connections and Certs depending on the field you would choose to work. I have no certs and my degree is in networking but I do clinical it applications. Just get the experience you will be good.

If you are in college and want to make bank right away which I was blessed to do select an internship with a company and go from there

bruh this is the beauty of IT. I can move literally anywhere in the world and so long as I have a solid internet connection, I can work anywhere. One of my former managers in the DC area just up and left to Thailand with his family because his wife landed a good medical gig out there. With his experience and background he had no problem being able to still have employment here in the US because all he needs is an Internet connection to be able to work.

I'm in Computer Sci right now and fear I'm already too deep in this computer science shyt to turn back :wow:

Just was inquiring about IT because I know it's less math/coding and generally it seems like you have more "chill" days in the work world. What's the difference between CS and IT in your opinions?
