Even now, the lottery system in its current form isn't that bad as we've seen teams in the latter half of the lottery managed to jump into the top 6 a la Memphis, New Orleans and even someone like Toronto. They should tweak the odds a bit more, but not to the point that they run the risk of a team that barely misses the playoff manages to end up with a #1 pick and a can't miss prospect in the process.

But also the conversation about tanking has gotten so big that people don’t seem to understand that some teams are just genuinely bad. Like even if every team tried their best to put in the most competitive team possible regardless of if it only strengthens them in the short-term, there’s still gonna be trash teams.

There’s no problem with that if it discourages teams from tanking.

Teams are going to tank regardless and changing up the lottery odds isn't going to change that. For the majority of these teams this year, ending up in the lottery and the chance to get Wemby outweighs making the play-in tournament. Even someone like Sacaramento who hasn't made the playoffs in nearly 20 years would benefit from getting Wemby even if it meant another year of not making the playoffs.

Seems like all they need to do is change the lottery odds so the worst 3 teams don't simply get the best odds. If you even the odds out amount the worst 6 teams for instance, and then the following teams aren't far behind you probably fix it.

The new USFL set the foundation by making the two worst records play a Toilet Bowl to win the #1 draft pick , maybe have a tourney for the the 3nd to 7th worst records to earn the 1st to 4th picks and ones in dead last get put in the lottery for 5th pick on

I mean but why would I play hard to win a game just to have the team draft my replacement and ship me somewhere I don’t want to go.

This to me stinks of getting out ahead of something we know will occur. Some teams have 0 reason to really compete this season. So even if you forced them to compete now you just made them worse for a longer time.
