From what I see they are more picky on the guy's long term potential (education/income, level of effort and commitment shown, family values, etc.), but less picky on the stuff that a lot of these women believe is "important".

I know chicks that were dealing with athletes and other high status dudes, and then they have a kid, and the average guy with a good job is now appealing. Priorities change, and finding a quality man that is in it for the long term overrides some of the factors that were considered before. Now they see the value in the regular looking engineer or accountant. And these dudes are used to dealing with average chicks so they go all out to impress a bad joint.
