Black people are told to either go to college or face death. You might as well fall of the the face of the earth if your "goal" at some point (usually the earliest convenience possible) is not wanting to get a degree (any degree). College is the only object of legitimized attainment for most people, especially for black folks.

I'm saving up some money to take some courses in a trade.
Bro I'm gonna tell u like this from experience. Most of them schools is bullshyt. The fastest way to get licensed WITH EXPERIENCE is to get a job in the industry as an apprentice. The time going to a classroom (and paying for it) is better spent on a jobsite getting paid. Schools don't teach the politics or trade secrets. I did it as a plumber in 5 years with no school, work circles around school cats. To be fair I did go to school for hvac however my reasoning is different now, I'm more pressed for time. I just see how hvac cats hit licks all day long an said fukk it. Again I'd be way more efficient if I had just got a job at an hvac company for the 14 months I was in night school.
Not knocking nobody going to school but :francis: I'd be wrong not to pull your coat.

I dunno...I was forced into college when I would have been happier with a trade.
Domineering single mother on my ass about being successful all the time.

I think every city has almultiple Unions (carpenter, electrician, plumbing, sheet metal, etc). Hit those up as they're always taking applications and they'll put you to work asap.

I was fresh outta jail and hit the sheet metal Union on a Friday. They had me working Sunday.

The trades are good because they don't care about your record long as it isn't rape or child molestation. That's what my super on my first job told me. Hell, everyone from the workers to management were felons!

I really might try one of the ones you mentioned or something similar to it. For the longest my moms has been telling me to do one of the certifications in the health field/medical like CNA or Medical Assistant but its just that i dont wanna feel like I'm being a sheep. That isn't to say everyone who does the medical/health thing is a sheep but I just wanna be out of the box plus I would feel better if I am a master/skilled at fields like the ones you mentioned as a Black man in this country. Then after I am in one of these trades after a while I will go for my bachelors and masters and just become an electric engineer and make bank :wow:

Trades can be good. But for blacks many times they are not.

Many Trades and the construction industry are some of the most racist jobs and industries in the country. Dealing with educated racist is hard enough in corporate. Dealing with uneducated racist rednecks everyday is pretty unbearable.

Also a lot of trades take a physical toll on your body and health. At the lower levels its damn near slave like working conditions. It's no wonder people don't go that route unless they have connects to move up quickly.

If you have a plan you can make it work but that goes for getting a degree too. Jumping into trades thinking everything will be sweet is as foolish as going to college and not knowing what you wanna do or how you will use your degree.

...I'd like to see more black women/men below taking FULL advantage of their financial aid (if their median household income qualifies). If I didn't have a job and was living with parents, I'd be in school full time. Hell, I have a full-time job now and still enrolled in 3 classes minimum each semester :whew: Some dudes are ok with sitting at home playing video games, bumming it up while their girl works to support them :what: I have no idea how this is even close to ACCEPTABLE for any "man".
