Mos Def doesn't get enough credit for this album imo. There was a clear division between underground and mainstream. That was erased in 99 when his album and Things Fall Apart dropped

I was torn between Mos & DOOM, And Jay and X. I chose X but I might change it.

As far as projects I love most? Mos Def of course.

But if we're asking who was MVP? in general? X.

I don't know if I'm buying this argument about the division between mainstream and underground being erased.
The underground just changed. It became J-Live and MF Doom and a whole host of others.

I agree. Black on Both Sides is an underrated album in terms of impact.

Mos Def came from the same circles as them especially J-Live. You rarely hear the word backpacker these days but it was real prevalent in 99. The Roots and Mos Def were the first from that scene I remember to get regular radio play. I remember seeing the Roots right around this time and Common was performing as a member of the Roots and he already had 3 albums out. But he became a star off the strength of them
