But that scene, let's call it the lyricist lounge for simplicity, carried on after Mos and the Roots broke through.Mos Def came from the same circles as them especially J-Live. You rarely hear the word backpacker these days but it was real prevalent in 99. The Roots and Mos Def were the first from that scene I remember to get regular radio play. I remember seeing the Roots right around this time and Common was performing as a member of the Roots and he already had 3 albums out. But he became a star off the strength of them

And J-Live never left that scene.
