Between 1998 and 1999, nobody was bigger than DMX and he had three quality albums to boot. Flesh came out at the tail end of 1998 and ...and Then There Was X came out at the very end of 1999. Basically book ends to 1999.

Mos Def came from the same circles as them especially J-Live. You rarely hear the word backpacker these days but it was real prevalent in 99. The Roots and Mos Def were the first from that scene I remember to get regular radio play. I remember seeing the Roots right around this time and Common was performing as a member of the Roots and he already had 3 albums out. But he became a star off the strength of them
But that scene, let's call it the lyricist lounge for simplicity, carried on after Mos and the Roots broke through.
The Roots didn't get radio play in Baltimore prior to that?
And J-Live never left that scene.

Not really. You Got Me was the first single they had on rotation here. I remember hearing Clones but it was always on a particular show
