just to clear one misconception I'm seeing in this thread. If you enter union trades you typically are required to go to college paid for by the union. Thats a part of the apprentice program.

You can't be a dumb and succeed in trades. It requires brains and brute. Thats a part of the shortage problem. Young Americans don't seem to have an interest in doing physical / challenging work.

People are shortsighted when it comes to skilled trades who don't know. If you're proficient at a skilled trade there are endless career paths you can travel and make real money.

Thread should be filled with information to help people in the OP. 100% agree with this post. Give people resources if you’re serious about it. Even if it helps one person it’s worth it.
Why can’t someone research the info for themselves? It’s not hard to see what trades, unions, and educational opportunities are available in your city. That’s just lazy. Figure out some shyt for yourself.

It’s a lot of valuable information in here. Based on your own goals and personal interests, you should be able to do a lot with it. If you don’t have goals or personal interests, this thread may not be helpful.

How can people be so contrarian with good information? Then other grown men are discouraging it. That’s sad.

College is extremely important but I def agree we don't do a good job of explaining that if you don't want to go to college - or if you can't - your best option is a trades job. Or a government job. So many brehs seem to settle for the retail or even warehouse job, busting their ass for little. I def want to encourage Coli brehs to take that chance and better yourself.
Here in Florida slot of uneducated black folks are security guards who knows actually the worst of the worst. Not only dealing with the negative perception of security guards then the low pay combined with Florida deregulation on employee rights if you not careful you'll be making 25 cents a year in raise. These jobs hire some many people because everyone quits. Trades are completely Hispanic dominated and it's a shame since Amazon pays a grip for their truck drivers , it's good money out here for brehs who in shape and can handle the load. I was shocked when there cac said 90 a hour to service elevators but that's a seriously brute job.

The way Florida works it's a small business dream I've seen pc tech jobs paying 12 a hour, this place is a goodmine for cats with money looking to start a business.

Everyone needs a marketable skill, I don’t care what it is. I don’t care if it’s a trade, a computer skills, degree, etc.

One you learn the skill, you figure out the best way(s) to apply it. That’s when you create the avenues for yourself.

I am not a lineman but was on a call today where the topic of electric lineman was discussed. This is going to be a huge issue, work force is retiring at a faster pace than they can be replaced.

But this year, there are an estimated 21,500 lineman job openings across the country. And demand is expected to grow by 8.5 % in the next four years.
Isn't this one of the more brutal trades?

That’s precisely why there’s a shortage. You have older white dudes teetering in retirement age at the top and Mexicans mid level and below. They still do things the old way. Not as easy as it looks for brehs.

Unless you get in through a program it’s going to be hard. I live in California and applied years ago in like 8 different job categories. Got zero call backs

Just said fukk it and went to college

How do you know this? Have you tried networking instead of dropping off a resume? There's millions of black men, how many actually tried?

Crazy thing is, Brehs are doing back breaking thankless work for low pay.

And you don't need brains like that. Electrician told me all you need is basic algebra.

Great post. The 'go to college' rhetoric has punched a serious financial hole in our community. Yeah you are paid well for your job but your loans erase a chunk of your income off rip.

If you didn't end up with loans I'm not talking about you obviously. You played it smart. Which, on this note, makes you the exception not the rule.

:comeon: Too many black men going to college is a problem I would like to have.

I hate this anti college sentiment that is so popular on TLR. We should be encouraging more black people to go to college not less. Like in what world is education a bad thing?

People hate on some communities for having more wealth than others (Jews, Indians, Koreans, Nigerians etc). But what all these communities have in common is they are the most educated communities in the U.S.

But I’ll let y’all carry on.

Because a lot of these dudes are dumb. That's all it boils down to. But ask them what theyre doing to help the black community. Not a damn thing.

Best thing to do if you want an average life and then a good life in your older years is to get on with your city, county or state government. Office job + pension...you won't make a lot but enough and the health insurance benefits are always a plus especially if you got a family.

This is such a wild take to me. How can you confidently advocate taking on stagnant government job in a thread where someone is advocating learning marketable skills that could yield MORE dollars per hour in the future rather than basically the same you were getting 15 years ago.

I think it's low self esteem to settle like this AND still say that's best for a family in a capitalistic society with rising inflation. Even if you didn't have a family, don't you get tired of just getting by?

Not really. I like my job and the pay is pretty decent especially for the area I live in. A lot of the senior level brothers are doing quite while and are making 90k/yr with insurance that costs about $60/mo. Seems good to me but you gotta work your way up.
