This is such a wild take to me. How can you confidently advocate taking on stagnant government job in a thread where someone is advocating learning marketable skills that could yield MORE dollars per hour in the future rather than basically the same you were getting 15 years ago.

I think it's low self esteem to settle like this AND still say that's best for a family in a capitalistic society with rising inflation. Even if you didn't have a family, don't you get tired of just getting by?

You’re not getting rich of trades either. Government jobs are the backbone of the black middle class. I’d prefer a government office job over a trade. Trades don’t offer pensions like Government jobs do. This by itself makes it a much better choice.

Add in the seasonality of some jobs and the the wear and tear on your body…

This board only presents the pros of trades without mentioning the cons.

Also the job security. I prefer stability over going job to job.

With that said you can get cut anywhere but government is a lil safer than private.

Not really. I like my job and the pay is pretty decent especially for the area I live in. A lot of the senior level brothers are doing quite while and are making 90k/yr with insurance that costs about $60/mo. Seems good to me but you gotta work your way up.
I always want to be above decent, at least for me. I think government jobs are great, but definitely need a second gig or side opportunity to earn more.

I’d rather be in position to double+ my salary, buy my own insurance and write it off. When I worked this one DOD contract, so many people had plans to stick it out for 10+ more years. It mad me so sad.

Relying on your employer for retirement is how alot of people get jerked, imo. I’m not saying trades will get you rich, but you can yield a good amount of money to position you more quickly than decaying at a job for decades.

Ha you are definitely right about that. I also work a side job 3-4 days week but I do have kids. I am trying to ride it out for the long run tho

We need more pensions not less. Also, you’re probably an outlier in your motivation to make money. But I think overall, we are in agreement that government jobs are good decent jobs.

:comeon: Too many black men going to college is a problem I would like to have.

I hate this anti college sentiment that is so popular on TLR. We should be encouraging more black people to go to college not less. Like in what world is education a bad thing?

People hate on some communities for having more wealth than others (Jews, Indians, Koreans, Nigerians etc). But what all these communities have in common is they are the most educated communities in the U.S.

But I’ll let y’all carry on.
this and OP from what I understand didnt even go to college and bashing higher education...not working in trades...like nah new messenger lol

You're talking to the wrong person. I've been making six figures for 15 years.

Again, when I speak on macro issues, I look at the median/average person not the outliers at either end.

I have kids too, that's why I am the way I am lol. Kids need your time and your money. I'd rather work one good paying job than two, well unless it's two well paying job and now we are talking. I hate barely getting by, it makes sick.

How do you know this? Have you tried networking instead of dropping off a resume? There's millions of black men, how many actually tried?

Breh just give it a rest. I know quite a few brehs who have tried. It’s hard as shyt . Meanwhile I stay seeing Mexicans get in like nothing. Atleast in my state

If there’s such a shortage and they need people, getting in should be as simple as breathing and walking through the door. All this network shyt is for the birds. Might as well go to college for that

Crazy thing is, Brehs are doing back breaking thankless work for low pay.

And you don't need brains like that. Electrician told me all you need is basic algebra.

the term "electrician" is almost too broad. there are many different disciplines within the "electrician" field. You need to to know basic math for the aptitude yes; but if you wanna go further in the field you can't be a dummy. What I mean isn't school smarts. Its problem solving, planning, troubleshooting, knowing theory(and most importantly how to apply it to the real world), you have to be intelligent.

Yea you can be a dummy; but guess what you're gonna be doing dummy work in the field. The shyt jobs. Depends what you're into. There are some guys who do one thing all day every day until they retire and they're cool with that. Get in where you fit in.

Isn't this one of the more brutal trades?

I personally don't think so; however you can't be soft and be a linemen. Big storm hits...you're out there in the most inclamite weather where a mistake can easily kill you. Its a trade off. Electricity in general is dangerous as fukk anyway you slice it. But all the fatalities and injuries are almost always from carelessness.
