Glad someone upped this thread. I'm looking to travel to Brazil twice early 2015. Once for Carnival (13-17) feb if I remember correctly. And for Tommorowland 1-3 May. Good advice. I will def drop stuff about my experience.

I am going back too. I think I will be in the country for most of February. What city are you going to for carnival?

No need to leave the US... just save up and travel. There have been years I have taken ~1 month off of work to travel. Work to live... don't live to work

What about just living and enjoying life. I don't know much about finance but can't you guys save up money and put it into some sort of investment vehicle and live off the interests? There's a guy in thecoli who does this apparently. I have to find the thread.

That dude busted his ass and made 6 figures for years to get to that point. Most brehs don't have that luxury :yeshrug:

Work is not that bad if you find something you enjoy doing, get good at it, and gain leverage so you're not a slave to your employer. But most brehs dont think beyond their next check :manny:

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
Successful people killing themselves just like regular people isn't the norm so its not really worth mentioning. I bet on this whole site less than 5% personally know somebody that took their own life. I don't think I said just professional success but if I did I meant success period. Lets also be real if you getting money, girls, and not bored, most guys are good. Most don't need some "higher calling" type flow to satisfy them. I agree about being happy in all parts but like I just said for most if their money right, getting girls, not bored all the time they are cool. Maybe they stuck in the matrix I don't know but from what I see they are good and that's all I can go by.

From what you see they are good, just like everyone puts up a front on facebook about how great their lives are, reality is the US is an unhappy country that is one of the unhappiest places on the planet according to polls :sadcam: The fact the US is the #1 consumer of anti-depressants should tell you that everything aint as it seems breh.

I tried to warn you breh, once you go there and come back to the states its just :ld: status everyday after.

Nah, if people find that leaving America is what they want to do, they should.

Now you know we can't put too much stock in polls. They got polls that will tell you things about us we not believing at all. I agree we mainly see the good but I also don't think the majority of people are ready to jump because they have that much depression either. I think it helps most stay in their circle and when doing so usually don't feel left out in the world. Life is good for me and that I can speak on and for the majority of the people I know (outside of some wanting more $$$). I would like to live somewhere different just because not because America is holding me back on some woe is me stuff that I usually hear online. There are folks like you but most imo are leaving because they stunk the joint up here like them dudes in that Brasil doc.

In lieu of recent events I'm looking more and more forward to my trip to Rio later this year, and ya'll can believe I'm going to explore every opportunity to get out of here even if its 6-8 months out of the year and not necessarily permanent. shyt I can always come back to this hell hole. Brother @4fossa what's the market on work opportunities? I've been thinking about looking into picking up a certificate for teaching English, just trying to acquire some transferable skills that I might be able to apply. Hell if I had some bread I would probably open up a basketball academy.
it's not easy, but it's possible. you need a lot of patience, connections, and a willingness to not make a lot of money to be successful.

it's not nearly as simple as "get certified --> go to brazil --> teach --> earn". getting a work visa is damn near impossible unless you have years of experience and possibly a B.A. in TESOL (at least) under your belt. and marketing and selling to brazilians is a lot different than doing it here.

also, dont expect a racial harmonious paradise in rio :patrice:

So I've heard.

What's the dynamics there? I'm going to be staying in whats considered a "wealthier" area called Urca so I'm already expecting some :mjpls: but I want to be amongst the Afro-Brazilians while I am there what places should I check out, downtown?

yeah you're in Zona Sul, you're not gonna be around a lotta black people compared to other places, but it's not like Leblon where you'd think they have security at the borders of the bairro to turn darker people away

the thing about beaches, especially in zona sul, is that people come from all over the city to chill there. so you got a crew of :mjpls: right next to the brazilian GBE

a lot of my black brazilian friends (and by that i mean those that actually consider themselves black brazilian, because i know a lot who would be considered black in the US, but not in Brazil) live in Jacarepaguá, but that's a mixed area. if you got heart it's near Cidade de Deus if you wanna be around "o povo". you could also go to Rocinha, which is a favela but has crazy development, full of afro brazilians and hood rich-osity.

be sure to hit up Lapa at night time

#1 thing is be careful tho. not paranoid, but careful. dont be stupid and think it's all good all the time, because regardless of skin color, many will consider you gringo and assume you're wealthier than they are, and they're probably right. you going solo?

Nah I'm going with one of my boys from school. oh and we're bringing sand to the beach :snoop: He's recently married and his wife and my girl were both like
mark-henry-finger.gif
when we told em we were going. So I'm not trying to do nothing foolish just want to enjoy myself and see what the city has to offer.

A lady I used to tutor stays in Rio and said we could come by I'll find out what neighborhood that is so you can tell me about it. Are there any museums in Rio detailing the country's black history?

black history museums, you gotta go to the northeast unfortunately. Salvador is full of those, but Rio has none. i was in Paraty, a small town in rio (the state), and it was the first portuguese settlement there, and there's laws barring people from changing it to preserve the history. which is all well and good until you get to the re-enactment. i saw a singular black man dressed in slave clothes standing on the shore. i just looked at him like :beli:

it's invaluable to know someone who lives there. any of you 4 travelers speak any portuguese?

Damn thats unfortunate to hear I was definitely hoping to check out atleast one.

I've been studying portuguese the last 3 months so I know a little bit but none of us are fluent. My guy who lives in Sao Paulo is going to be coming up for a few days to help show us around so I'm sure that will be helpful too
