OP stated that he assumed that today's rappers were "better" than the previous generations due to the prevalence of hip hop on the billboards, which is simply a measurement of album sales, I would be willing to argue just because an artist goes platinum and another goes gold does not imply that the better selling album is the better album artistically, but that is the question he posed. For those who argue better music = more album sales than my point stands, and that is how some define good music. I see you don't, and I don't either, but I was just presenting an argument for why hip hop has grown in popularity among the general population.

There is a relationship, however, and while it may not be concrete, it exists not only in music but in any arena of life. like I said in my reply to @mobbinfns, many people use popularity and album sales to define good music, and I think there is some truth to it.

That's like saying movies started out in black and white with no sound so let's go back to that.

That "call and response" shyt was largely prior to it even hitting a national level. It was mostly local. I been into rap since 1985....by the time the late 80's rolled around that shyt was mostly dead. So nah....going back to that isn't "the roots"....it's a regression. It started out as that because nobody knew what else it could be....that doesn't mean that's what it should be.

the old heads had BARS.... the young nikkas got HITS (without sampling hits or getting some random chick in the booth).... the young nikkas got ENERGY... the young nikkas got flows that never been heard before (songwriting).. thats why they take it so personal when someone jacks their flow I guess... its just DIFFERENT........ the producers are so much more epic in their production too which plays a big role in the music too....

comparing the sauce of today to the sauce of yesterday is like comparing apples and oranges....

People nowadays don't have some kinda inherent hit making ability....due to streaming their entire album is singles. They have 15-20 chances for a song to blow up, vs 1-4 chances from official singles back in the day. I'm not weighing in on either way being better but the odds of a song being a hit now are far greater due to fans directly deciding that via streaming.

Secondly, I'm :dead: how you keep talking about rappers back then needed to sample a hit or have a female....BONE was going 3-4x plat....Pac was going 3-10x plat....BIG was going 4-10x plat....Outkast 3x plat, Snoop 3x plat, Wu-Tang 4x plat, etc etc etc. You might say "but everyone was selling!" which is my point....rap was literally just rap and as a genre it was going toe to toe with every other genre on the planet.

And it was just rapping. Not singing. Not trying to cross over into other genres. The biggest "rapper" currently in the game is Drake and half his songs aren't rap. His biggest songs ("Hotlline Bling", "One Dance") aren't even the same genre.

Lastly cats get upset over flows being bitten because that's all they have. Migos claims people bit them and that flow has been around since 3-6 and Lord Infamous. There really ain't a new style or flow under the sun.

This is incorrect.

Songs being sent to radio work the exact same as they did back then and the 3rd or 4th single is determined by fanfare just like it was back then.

No ones entire album is singles.
