what you're describing is smart dumb, which exists IMO, and is completely different from the dismissive "fake deep" comment....

i also find it funny how everyone is focusing on fake deep and ignored the other part of my OP which is show me what "real deep" is then :jbhmm:

i agree that there's a layer of fans who do too much, but this term is primely applied to certain types of rappers in a derogatory way, people always posting the "not feeling the fake deep rhymes on ...." "fake deep nikka...." without talking about the fans, they're talking squarely about the artist. like every single thing the artist does gets dismissed as fake deep? i dont get it
Of course its derogatory.

I'm black.

It comes off as exploratory.

You may be too young to remember this.

Questlove once did an interview where he said this shirt Jay Z wore at his unplugged concert...:

jay-z-che-guevara-with-bling-on.jpg

...was a moment when he realized mainstream artists would start exploiting the whole "woke" vibe for money.

Now, he wasn't saying Hov was outright guilty, but he saw what we're dealing with now. A bunch of weak artists half-assing how "aware" they are to sell generic bullshyt under the guise of consciousness.

Yeah, if he is making a full album on subjects then at some point I want him to dive into these topics and provide me with personal anecdotes.

I don't want an album full of 3rd person characters with no real backstories committing terrible acts so Kendrick can add a line or two of hollow commentary about said actions. Why not listen to someone whose been through that give you the real mentality?
...again. this is precisely why when people talk about relationships like Drake does or how Sean talks about his friends or KRIT talks about his angle or Gibbs or anyone else does it...it just seems more authentic.

That connection is there.

Cole suffers from this too.

Lets revisit this classic @noz article:

Why is JCole mediocre?

Basically in this generation, any song not talking about Money, Hoes, and Violence is labeled as fake deep....
This bullshyt white critique talking point. Lemme guess, you're Oprah?

A lot of songs isn't talking about this either. Ya'll act like this is all thats on the market.

And yes, If its poorly done, then yes, it should be labeled as fake deep.

I don't respect attempts. I respect execution and completion.

TRYING to be socially conscious isn't entertaining.

Entertaining, is entertaining.

Love Big L but Street struck was kinda fake deep for me, why because in the same album he was talking about even if my grandma violate she gotta go.
Maybe it's the bi polar nature of the Album that makes it so great 1 conscious song for 8 demonic songs.
Heres the difference....a lot of those 5 Percenter teachers weren't fake deep cause they REALLY thought they had knowledge.

it was more smart-dumb shyt, but it was the sincerity they had.

If you wanna call Jay Electronica "Smart Dumb"...I'll allow it. But he makes incredible songs that are incredibly sincere and honest about what he seriously believes.

Theres no half-assing or question or hesitation or refinement to it. Its raw and appears genuine.

You just have to be open, honest, vulnerable, and true to your own testimony."Deepness" isn't some intricate/artsy fartsy/complex concept.

It's the ability to share your perspective simply and clearly. The more clarity, the better.

A lot of MC's think hitting you with some shyt you have to unravel and decipher is deep.

But they're just a donkey with a few books on their back.An azz...Parroting a mumbo jumbo'd version of another man's perspective.

A collage of thoughts they fished out of some random text.

"Deep" to me is an internal thing. How deep you can dig down into your own being and generate original thought.Dipped in your own essence.

You're not really going to find it outside of yourself, parroting books. If you're true to yourself and blessed with a high comprehension,

you can definitely apply the knowledge you extract from books more originally/effectively than a superficially deep/surface person.

I'm a tough critic.I think the game is full of superficially deep rappers/mc's right now.Creative on the concepts, but the execution is anemic.

That's an example of true "deep" IMO^^^

No artsy fartsy concept/"intellectual"/"talking pretty" shyt for you to decipher.

Just a man sharing his own testimony...from the depths of his soul.

Most folks can't even find that spot within themselves.Too afraid of being that vulnerable.

Pac is the king of "deepness", tho

Simply sharing your human experience is the deepest shyt. It's something we all have to experience.Strongest form of connectivity.

It's not delusions of grandeur on a track...that's escapism.....Folks like to escape, tho

How many years you spent memorizing shyt old white dudes tell you doesn't equal intelligence. Killer Mike is very intelligent. He went to Morehouse for one year and then dropped out though. A lot of people have graduated from college and are complete idiots. A lot of people have dropped out of college and are extremely intelligent; and vice versa.

Carry on.
I didn't say Killer Mike was an idiot.

And I'm not equating education with skill...but theres a general trend.

MOST of these rappers aren't really that bright. And don't come at me with this "cac education" bullshyt.

there are no mental gymnastics, i see them as two different things. fake deep seems to be someone who apparently doesn't know everything about every subject they bring up, smart dumb nikkas are the people who'll read some shyt about the government being untrustworthy and flip that into some dumb action like keeping all their cash in the house cuz they don't trust banks.
You are moving the goalposts.

You want another example? Look at these fake hotep females who seem like Erykah Badu clones who are embracing the lifestyle as a means of vanity, not as a means of actual personal change and embodiment.
