90's. Althight ironically, that's when people were calling some rappers sellouts or crossover acts.

You had underground cats that bubbled and became mainstream they had success and respect from most ppl (Biggie, Nas, Pac, Snoop, Wu, Onyx)

You had underground cats: Jeru, The Liks, 3-6 Mafia, Common, The Roots, UGK Tribe (close to mainstream)

Straight mainstream: Kris Kross, Fugees (artuably could be in first category)

Notice that u had ppl that earned their stripes from undergeound to mainstream and there's a good regional mix. They developed as an artist before you even heard an album from them so when u heard the album it had a higher chance of sounding polished and good after u already heard their raw ability through opening shows, features and singles.

Cole aan Kendrick also started underground and thas part of why they have staying power.

After the 90's the tales got tipped and the underground became more and more devalued.
So acts like MIgos, Lil baby, Future, young thug didn’t start in the underground?

Hip hop was destroyed when hustlers became musicians exclusively cause they have the money to pay to get ahead. When that first started they were atleast putting in tye time to be great artists. Combine that wit sincerity being replaced by swag... yea. Here we are.

All i want from an artist is honesty but well never get that again on a mass scale. Itll he one or two artists a year if ya lucky.

The death of the regional sound is what really hurts tho.

Suge and Puffy killed hip hop, by killing the greats

If Tupac and Big was still alive the game would be different....

They both could have lasted up till 2002 with pac transitioning to movies and big probably putting more New York rappers on..

The south played a huge roll in ruining the genre but east west and midwest are just as much at fault. When they started making copy cat southern music with double time hi hats 808s and chants. Straight cornball status.

over demand for name brand rappers ..... fans want the food already made

back then it was more of a process ...the fans had to make their own food (support the rappers they like)

Now you can just follow a rapper that was built single handed made by the label whooped up like fast food

They dont have to spend a dollar now adz can make the money and companies can buy their own product

producing look of success which will draw mainstream fans to support the label made rap artist

Average fan see a lyricisty lyricist rapper and says we seen thaat before we want a purple and yellow haired rapper rapping about lemon pepper wings and sushi

They think that the first one to blow up with the style is the only to use it even if another rapper did it first in the underground

thus seeing authentic dope rappers as copies of their favorite mainstream rapper instead of doing their research and respecting a dope rapper for what it is

i think migos and drake are dope so i've never settled or anything. hip hop is a huge tree and there are many branches. migos and drake have their lane while others occupy different branches. it's about being good at what you do

back in '94 i'd listen to jeru the sun rises in the east then turn around and pump 69 boyz album

i like diversity, at the end of the day it's all hip hop

don't blame the south

shyt died when prison industrial complex muthafukkas started investing into the music slowly killing conscious music and blindly promoting violence in music for obvious reasons

when cube left and dre dropped nikkaz 4 life album, which majority tracks had nothing but pure ignorance this is the direction where a lot of rappers went

This will NEVER get it's just due :francis:
