I see we still need this thread.

And for the uninformed, dedicated servers would actually not improve a 1v1 situation.

it depends what you mean. there's not really a situation where two computers are just equally sharing information. there almost always has to be some kind of 'host' running the game. even in LAN matches

with most 1v1 fighting games, 2 players can play on the same machine. so obviously dedicated servers wouldn't affect that

I think it makes more sense to mitigate potential "host" advantages than adding a new layer of transport in between the two connected opponents. If you're in Cali and I'm in NY, spinning up a server in between us to host the match isn't going to help us reduce lag. The data will take longer to get from me to you and vice versa.

as opposed to what? it's better than one of those two people being the 'host'

The only problem with someone being "host" is that if it's programmed poorly there is a host advantage. That shouldn't happen. Data should be mutually shared and treated equally. Putting a server in the middle doesn't fix the host advantage either... someone will still get their packets to the server faster. The way the dedicated server in the middle would fix that issue is the same way it should be fixed in a peer-to-peer scenario. Dedicated servers aid with multiple connections because to treat every connection equally would require the data be transferred in N! different directions (where N = number of players). Having a dedicated server reduces that number to N. When there's only two players N! = N.

:what: I guess every multiplayer game is "programmed poorly"

I added more to my post. What games that are built strictly for 1v1 and not meant to support more than that, can you confirm have "host" advantage in that one person experiences absolutely no lag and the other person experiences variable lag?

how does it not fix the "host advantage" when neither player is the "host" in that situation?

I don't know of any games that are designed like that. like I said, most of those 1v1 fighting games allow both players to play (locally) on the same machine. so all these networking issues aren't an issue at all

"numbers that have a value of less than ten are..." or at least "numbers that are less than..." or perhaps it should be "numerals representing a number with a value less than ten..."

is that a complete sentence?
No and that was intentional. Any of the "number" sentences are correct and mean the same thing.

Nice try :umad:
