Hip hop is still producing great albums but almost all of them are coming from older guys, it says a lot about the genre but im happy to have what we have
The last “newer” artist I really liked and put in my regular rotation was JID and he’s 34 lol
I keep telling myself that as we age out of what is considered “cool” or “genre-defining” thats just how its naturally going to go. I didn’t get anything from artists like Pop Smoke, XXXTencion, Kodak, Glorilla, Sexy Redd, Juice World, 21 Savage, NBA Youngboy, Ice Spice, drill rap in general, etc. In no way, shape, form or fashion does anything about their music or movement speak to or move me. I hear one of their songs and i’m just hearing noise. To that end i’m happy that the legend has it series is something I can look forward to. And that for the most part all the artists have released projects that were enjoyable. Thats SEVEN albums worth of material I can consistently bump, with at least two albums so far being legit AOTY contenders. Add on to that Clipse releasing an incredible reunion project. Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist dropping heat, GNX still being in rotation from last year, LL Cool J’s The Force still being in rotation. Common & Pete Rock’s The Auditorium still being in rotation. I have NOTHING to complain about when it comes to quality Hip Hop music. I’m not a Ransom fan, but I can tell he puts his all into his projects and thats great for fans of his. Same thing for Griselda. RZA is about to help The Juice Crew drop an album. The elder statesmen are kicking ass and taking names and thats just FINE with me. Imagine if Nas had retired after 2012 and Jay never dropped 4:44 and all we had was Kendrick and J.Cole to uphold any standard of lyricism within the mainstream. shyt would be HORRIBLE. We need the legends and icons of the genre to continue showing that there ARE real rewards and dividends to be reaped through craft and care regarding the whats and hows of presenting an album.
I really hope fans show up and show out for Nas & Premo. Any and everybody who had anything REMOTELY negative to say about the Hit-Boy era should be on their knees thanking God Almighty that Nas apparently feels the juice is worth the squeeze in “taking it back” to golden era for at least one final project.
