The question is why did the powers that be decided that New York was no longer viable? That forced rappers to try to copy the sound, only to get criticized for not being original. Yet people criticized NY rappers for not adapting, it’s damned if you do damned if you don’t.

Lupe is the only one who I consider "not a 90s act", but he's the classic type of rapper.

Doom and Ghost are quintessential 90s artists. Common is from the Chi, but he's very much classic Hip Hop too.

They are definitely different than that which came before, but not different enough that I put them in the bag with the trap/drill artists that have dominated this century.

Again, I think people underestimate the car-culture outside of NYC such that “headphone” music doesn’t resonate the same way as it does in the ways most people outside of NYC listen to music
