Do you think there is a relationship between a persons taste in music & intelligence?

The data does not say that listening to Mozart will make you smarter. It shows that those who naturally gravitate to Mozart generally score higher on the SAT. That is the difference.

I do not believe that SAT scores are accurate measures of intelligence, because like I said before, there are many different types of intelligence. It depends on what definition you choose to go by. BUT I do believe that the researcher has a point.

I am not sure why people are making this into a genre argument. All genres of music have their good and bad. This is not an argument about rap vs classical. I don't think anyone is arguing whether people who listen to rap are stupid, because that is obviously false. It is about the particular artists, songs and lyrics.

No, the data doesn't... that's just what you decided the data meant.YOU said this, the data doesn't.

you came to a conclusion based upon what you feel this represents, not what the data is.

the data is nothing more than were the listeners of specific artists SAT scores fell on average.

do you know what confirmation bias is?

let's pick a random top 20 school in the study
Williams College
only 8% black
so I doubt a rapper could make it in the top 10 there

a lot of the places where someone like Lil Wayne is listed are HBCU's which are almost all black

also it might be the case that kids at the higher ranked places pick what artists to like on Facebook more strategically so they can be hipsters or whatever

if you're in an elitist environment you might not want to have Gucci Mane and Future and all that on your Facebook even if you liked their music

Radiohead will always beat out Lil Wayne at certain top schools because they actually have complex lyrics with meaning. It takes someone who is a bit of a deep thinker to gravitate to Radiohead and prefer their music. Its not about race, genre, or being a hipster.

If you actually believe that it means that a guy can just start listening to Mozart out of nowhere and just magically become smarter than you need to go back to school.

He is a hacker. I don't expect to take his info at 100% value. Like I said before, I posted that to show that there is a relationship. Other studies have also confirmed this. There is a definite relationship and we are unwilling to acknowledge that.

:comeon: so he hacked into peoples' personal data instead of using the general data that he says he used? I doubt it

even if there is a relationship I don't think it's significant in any way

it's definitely not causal
so what if there's a correlation? that has virtually no predictive power on an individual basis... I've known people with classical music training who are super good at playing an instrument and can't listen to pop (with hip hop included in that) because it's too simple musically yet they're not book smart

and I've known book smart people who listen to nothing but southern/radio rap

I'm sure you could find a correlation between SAT scores and another random variable... that doesn't mean that it's valid, predictive, or even interesting

Radiohead is popular far beyond the top schools though (in that study)

for example University of Arkansas at Little Rock where the average SAT is 885/1600

:what: No. He got famous for being a hacker. And I have also stated before that it lacks validity, BUT he does have a point and other research has proven that.

Once again, being educated or "book smart" does not necessarily equal intelligence. It depends on how intelligence is defined really.

I don't see why anyone would study this topic it's not useful or intellectually challenging

I personally think Hip Hop is the most political and thought provoking music there ever was. The way that it portrays (or used to) all the dimensions of the human spectrum was unmatched. There was anger, aggression, pride, introspection, and of course nihilism. I see death around the corner...

IQ is a poor metric of measuring intelligence, IQ is only good at measuring IQ. I will say that however people who have a propensity to engage in music which is largely ignorant will usually engage in other media that is ignorant, leading me to believe that they MIGHT be ignorant.

:whoa:

American music praises Jimi Hendrix to no end... and that nikkas life was nothing but money, drugs and hoes.

shyt, most of the greatest songs ever made...aren't exactly shyt that you needed a mensa membership to understand or enjoy.

Kiss is one of the greatest Bands ever...and they weren't talking bout shyt more than fukking, doing drugs and partying all night.

Jimmy Hendrix was a genius and the greatest guitar player there ever was.

I don't think anything like Radiohead is necessarily "smart music" though

if you're a huge classical music expert I might bet that you're smart but otherwise I can't make reliable predictions

:what:

out of what region of your ass did you pull this nonsensical post?

how did you even get this from anything i just said?

i'm telling you, that the data doesn't mean anything more than what he found...and that the conclusion YOU came to, is one YOU came up with...because all thats shown is a chart, and were said SAT scores lie in regards to who listens to them, nothing more.... and you're talking how i somehow believe that you can listen to Mozart and become smarter.

:heh:

He found that the smartest students listened to Beethoven and the students who rung in at the bottom of the SAT scores listened to Lil’ Wayne.

Take it how you want to take it. I personally don't believe the SAT is an accurate measure of intelligence, but I do believe there is a point to all this.
