Well, racial profiling doesn't work. But profiling other facets including race, works.
What do I mean by that? In Israel, they have clamped down on airport security since hijacking their planes became a thing to do by terrorists in the 70s. You have to go through multiple levels of security before you get to the gates where you can board a plane. You have all these people who "look" just like you. All these Mediterranean people, like Arab, Palestinian and Lebanese people, have the same skin tone, hair color, etc. as an Israeli. They have trained personnel looking for certain clues and stopping passengers if they are acting or appear dicey. Look at how many hijackings or airport bombings they have had in the past couple of decades for Israeli passenger planes. They laugh at US airport security.
Should we profile by race? No, not exclusively. Race plus trip to Muslim country? Maybe. Adult male, plus race, plus trip to Muslim country, plus contacts with terrorists, yes, definitely set that profile. We have other persons of interest to look at. There are Muslims who are Caucasian, black and Asian. They could slip through the cracks if you are just looking at Arabial dudes. Shoe bomber was a white dude if I recall. Muslims from Africa and Asia exist and are part of terrorists groups.
