laffy taffy and crank that hate was less about the south and more about the ringtone sub genre. for every pop lock and drop it there was chicken noodle soup, aunt jackie and this is why i'm hot... and true snoop & ice-t definitely called out soulja but also you have to acknowledge that ice-t used to work with brother marquis and snoop was signed to no limit. so it was less about hating the south and more about criticizing one artist. i'd venture to say that was actually more generational than regional....

some good points here though because new york really loved thug motivation 101 and not only did east coast artists like nas work with southern acts around that time, we can go back as early as 1997 where LL worked with Master P & Mase had Eightball & MJG on his debut album. so where am i going with this?

even with taking these things into consideration from where i stand we've always been xenophobes in our city and i'm not even talking about the industry, i'm referring to hip hop fans in general. we called southern artists (and west coast too don't trip) simple and hated on them for not being lyrical. it was an attitude most prevalent i'd say from about '87 until about '97 which guys like j prince and uncle luke remember well. as we entered the new millennium this stance softened a bit but was still real in the field. even if we take our conversation out of hip hop for just a minute, we've been called out for east coast bias and being arrogant new yorkers in all facets of entertainment, sports & pop culture. you think these folks are imagining this? and who was ugk telling to quit hating the south, the west coast?

I didnt start traveling to NYC until the past few years honestly.

However, I never was in the Jim Crow South, Communist Russia, or in Harlem during the renaissance. However, others were and passed down their experiences. I also consumed their experiences via media, books, etc. That's how history works. So I didn't have to physically be in NYC in the 90s to know the history.

Not disrespecting your experiences, but I'll take the totality of the masses view that aligns with what naturally makes sense given the hip hop climate at the time.

Fam. Come to NYC. And talk to anyone who was really out here in the era. Like I said. nikkas let the publications fool them. If nikkas go by the Source awards. U would swear NY aint fukk wit Death Row and the west coast from Snoop’s rant. But it was literally the COMPLETE opposite in the city. Even Prodigy and other rappers spoke about it. Snoop made that shyt some East Coast shyt in his rant but it was really some Puffy vs Suge shyt at the Source awards.

We always fukked wit more lyrical artist more but thats more where the bias in the city kicks in. Every city has that. But overall fam. We fukked wit other regions. And showed love to other regions. Especially if they was dope. Son u know how many nikkas I know favorite group was Bone Thugs in the 90s? Myself included. nikkas loved other regions fam.

I swear these nikkas here love running with some most of NY was hating on the south & other regions when it wasn't true at all. I had the Outkast Player's Ball single on cassette real time bro. I've said this a million times here before but we fuked with Death Row heavy real time back then. I could be in my neighborhood in BK hearing Snoop or Ice Cube. Then go out to Queens or Long Island hearing the same thing. One of my older brothers was bumping MC Ren in BK in his car back in in the 90's too. Like you said NY didn't tolerate bullshyt corny rap. If you were wack you were called wack & got boo'ed back then; it's that simple

These cry baby threads are weak. Dudes have no idea what they’re talking about. Especially when the city has different styles by borough/section of a borough/blocks. I know dudes from one side of my projects that wouldn’t wear certain clothes or use certain words but somehow everyone came to agreement that out of town music wouldn’t be played :gucci:. A city with millions of people/ people from all over the world:russ:. Growing up, I knew so many fake pacs (even when he had beef with bad boy and dissed New York). Cube had so much love here and it’s hilarious when he’s upset knowing damn well he was accepted over here.
And you should never speak on something you don’t know anything about, you make yourself look stupid. With that said the south can “run the game” whatever that means, for the next 50 years and still won’t be considered the meat. Don’t confuse fast food with fine dining:yeshrug:
