if you're an effective communicator and your relationship is more than sex and netflix, you should have a pretty decent idea of whether or not you want to be with a person, if you determine that you're not interested in continuing the relationship, you break up, not find a secret woman to fill in the gaps. I've never seen a failed relationship were there weren't signs that indicated that failure was near.

I'm older than most nikkas here on the coli and have never had the misfortune of turning bitter or cold because I was hurt by some woman and I've had quite a few relationships, most of them meaningful and fulfilling.

Yeah, if I've chosen to be in a relationship with one woman then I fully go in knowing what it is I have to do on my end to be a good S.O.
