He will never be assigned to a single player over the course of a game. Will generally be roaming going from one man to another all in one possession because of his responsibilities as a help defender. There was a possession in that Feb 26 OKC game where he helps on KD clearly baiting him to pass an open Kyle Singler. He passes, Green reacts seemingly before the ball even leaves KD's hands, forces a strip on Singler.

Another where he was "manned" to Ibaka, sees Russell Westbrook trying to eurostep his way into the paint and blocks his shot

Another where he was manned with Durant who passes to Ibaka, and Green sneaks in for the steal

Rather than being assigned to a single player, he's essentially responsible for guarding an entire team over the course of a game. That's not to say that you can put him out there by himself obviously but he is the living embodiment the phrase "everywhere at once" when speaking to defensive versatility in basketball.

This is why the Warriors defense goes from one of the best defenses to rock bottom without him on the floor. They have no one else who can come remotely close to fulfilling this role for them.

And I think that hurts him a little bit. When you hear Kawhi you think "oh man somebody bout to get locked up or have a hard night"
When you hear Draymond you think "he's about to be active all night and cause trouble"
And while that's great DPOY is a "you bout to get locked up award" when it comes to non centers.
That could be why he not getting as many votes :manny:

Yeah pretty much. Kawhi is often solely attributed for the shooting percentage of X player while Green guards such a wide variety of guys & roams so well that it can be difficult for people to pinpoint who he's impacted offensively. The answer is everyone but most will hold him solely responsible for the production of a power forward just because he plays the position. Kawhi also being a better player than Green in a vacuum adds to his cache

So I understand why Kawhi won, predicted that he probably would and I'm not really gonna protest it. Just gonna offer my opinion as to why I strongly believe Green is the best defender in the league.

He's a better defender.
Also, he doesn't cry to refs like Green.
He doesn't get away with fouls like Green.

:smugfavre:

Nah. I love Whiteside but any Heat fan will tell you that other players have to scheme around his PnR defense (Dude sinks way too much and will give up wide open jumpers to microwave players), he can be a little too quick to leave his feet because he's block hungry, he can struggle denying post position by stronger bigs, and he's a little uncomfortable guarding bigs that have a little range on the jumper.

Whiteside's biggest benefit is he simply intimidates teams due to his mixture of length, timing, and instincts. He'll snatch a block that looks impossible and even if you score on him because he bit on a fake, his presence is still there. It's easy to see his defensive weakness when you go back and watch tape plus you're looking from a bird eye's view but it's just an entirely different thing to play against him.

But NOBODY wants to point that out. When have you seen Draymond be assigned to cover Durant, LeBron, Melo, PG, Hayward the whole game like Kawhi has been asked to do AND do a great job at it.

And people wanna talk about how Kawhi has Duncan behind him like Draymond doesn't have Bogut and Ezeli behind him

Because it would take away from all the other great things on defense if he was just assigned to ONE wing player, and in turn the Warriors defense wouldn't be as effective as it is without him being a DE, MLB and FS all in one. If your argument is he isn't capable of defending an elite wing player for an entire game: in the last OKC/Warriors game, from my memory he had 10+ possessions guarding Durant by himself - resulted in Durant shooting 1-5, a few turnovers and forced him to give up the ball to teammates. He had the same amount of possessions guarding Harden earlier in the season with similar results. There's quite a few elite or good wing defenders he's managed to lockdown throughout the season.

With all the help defense Kawhi receives, and all the other possessions other Spurs defenders are guarding Durant - the volume of possessions margin between Kawhi guarding Durant by himself and Draymond guarding Durant (during that particular game) isn't that great.

I mean shyt after all Draymond is 6"7'; he's basically built to be a wing defender. If this were the 80s, he'd be spending all his time on SFs - he'd basically be what Rodman was in Detroit. The only difference is he has the freedom to do what he wants on the defensive end.

And people wanna talk about how Kawhi has Duncan behind him like Draymond doesn't have Bogut and Ezeli behind him
That's different though, besides the fact that Draymond can still anchor a great defense without either of those two on the court, he doesn't receive anywhere near the degree of help that Kawhi does, because he essentially is the help. He's the one that can protect the paint/rim at an elite level - Kawhi isn't doing that - that's what Duncan is for.

The difference between Kawhi and Tacklemond is how players react to him...

Tacklemond is a phenomenal post defender...but big men still test him...he is keeping them from scoring...but it's not like they go into a shell and don't even try...it's not like teams throw it down to the post and Tacklemond is guarding the guy and the guy says fukk this and just passes it back out...See LMA two 20 and 10 games...see Whiteside game...see Greg Monroe lighting him up...See Drummond going for 14 and 20...

Kawhi is exactly the opposite, in which once he draws a defensive assignment on a guy, they typically just stop looking for their shot altogether...Chris Paul murdered the Spurs in the first half of a game this year and had 20 or more...Kawhi guarded him mostly in the second half he shot 4 times...Damian Lillard was having a decent game against the Spurs this year...Kawhi guarded him down the stretch he shot the ball 3 times...4 games against the rockets and in 2 of them Harden only shot 10 times...pretty crazy when you consider he led the league in field goal attempts...

OP posting gif of Tacklemond forcing KD to miss a shot makes no sense...

Let's take a look at KD numbers against GS this year...

March 3rd : 11 - 17 for 32 points

Feb 27th : 13 - 28 for 37

Feb 6th : 12 - 25 for 40

Don't see how it is possible to say a guy can guard the perimeter "even if it's Kevin Durant" when KD scored higher than his average against GS every single time they played this year on right around 50% shooting...it would seem that not only did Tacklemond not play good defense against KD in these games but no one played good defense in these games...

This is pretty much the equivalent of me trying to prop up Kawhi defensive ability and then I post a clip of him blocking Kyrie Irving shot...from the game in which Kyrie dropped 50 points on the Spurs in San Antonio and single handily beat them...

You can say the same for 99% of stats.

I mean points per game is just a made up stat in the same vein isn't it? How many points do they get from travelling or any other illegal activity with the ball in hand? How many points do they get from cherrypicking on the offensive end when a teammate has created a turnover? How many and-1s or FT attempts do they get which aren't really fouls? How many points do they get in garbage time when defenses aren't focusing like they normally do?

It depends on what the shot situation is - isolation/post/hand-off/off-screen etc etc. And no it's not typically when a player just happens to be in the vicinity of a player shooting - it's when they're activity defending the shot by themselves.

You call my posting shytty, when you think think defensive field goal attempts aren't reflective of one's defensive ability, and just are a meaningless stat...

:heh:
Bruh, half the Coliseum is retarded in regards to stats. I don't even know why i try to have serious conversations here. These guys are getting statistical evidence of Green being a better defender than Kawhi and they reply with "cac stats":dead:.

Don't kill yourself arguing with these idiots.

For all this help that he, Kawhi recieves, you still fail to acknowledge/admit that Draymond receives just as much. Duncan is NOT what he once was defensively this season....hell he doesnt even play but a lil over 20 minutes a game. LMA, Boris, and West surely arent on the level of Bogut and Ezeli are defensively.

Like i said in another thread, had Draymond won it last year or/amd this season, i wouldnt have made a sniff about it and attempt to discredit him. Hell im not tryna do that now.
