every album is like the same thing, it's not 'hot' when it drops
but when you re listen to the album like after a few months or a year, then it's fire
although, marketing has a huge factor when it comes to determine what is hot as soon as the album drops as it plays a major role

i think the only album that was really as soon as it dropped was the 7 day theory by 2pac.. shyt was magical..

7 day theory was a disappointment initially since it wasn't a star studded death row album like AEOM.

you can use all the smilies you want, but so far we been stating opinions on the topic: was RD hot when it dropped....future stated his, i stated mine, they didnt agree, that's cool...the issue is you and others are trying to state yall opinions like they facts, and they not....when you wanna get to facts, lets see: around the time the album dropped, people knew about jay and RD, fact...it had a single on a popular movie's soundtrack, fact....he was getting talked about from other established artists, fact....had singles poppin before RD dropped (aint no nikka, dead pres, and can i live), and singles poppin after it dropped (knock the hustle, brooklyn's finest), fact.....had specials on mtv/bet, fact....received between 4-5 on a 5 grading scale, fact....you and others are trying to add shyt to the convo to prove yall 'right'.....the topic isnt if it was classic, was jay was the biggest out, if it was the best that year, etc...it was 'RD wasnt hot when it dropped'....

you are comparing them....cause you're comparing albums from artists that are established to a 'new' artist...so to compare them, you compare their debuts to his, not their 2nd and 3rd albums to his...what the fukk?...of course the established artist gonna get talked about more, people know that person more...

edit - also, like you said: yall experience =/= my reality...i'm not gonna change my opinion just to go with he crowd...for yall it might not have been hot and getting play like that, but it was getting play like that around my way....

It wasnt hot when it dropped though, its what we been arguing about this whole thread....did you hear the other artist Future mentioned as who was hot at the time....you wanna tell me Jayz and RD was "hot" in comparison:mjlol:

It's true. Jay-Z got national attention due to the popularity of Foxy Brown. She was the 1996 blow out star that year... and when "Aint' No nikka" came out on the Nutty Professor soundtrack... nobody outside of NYC ever really heard of Jay-Z and it was Foxy's verse (which he wrote, of course) that people rocked with because she was the more visible star. During that year he was under Biggie's shadow... and even after Biggie died he was still under that shadow which Puffy capitalized.... So, both 1996 & 1997 he couldn't blow up... he even FOLLOWED that shiny suit era formula on his 2nd album and all of that.... it was up until HARD KNOCK LIFE when he finally was able to blow and step out and be THAT DUDE in hip hop... and that's when Priority RE-RELEASED "Reasonable Doubt" to capitalize and got people who slept on it in '96 to check it out and it was then was viewed as a classic.

But out of those TWO YEARS... the biggest names in hip hop between '96 & '97 were: Biggie, 'Pac, Fugees, Nas, Busta, Missy, Foxy, Puffy, Lil Kim, Ma$e, Snoop, and Master P. Jay-z wasn't on that level yet. It took him LEAVING Priority and joining Def Jam alongside DMX and Ja Rule to blow....which you do have to give most of the credit to Irv Gotti. That's why it wasn't any coincidence that all of them blew up roughly the same time in '98.
Most of the credit to Irv? Naw.
On some deal making shyt yea, but as far as Jay becoming hot, credit to bad boy crew, puff .
Biggest features on first album
Were Mary and biggie, two stars created and executive produced by puff.
He was featured doing the intro on biggie artist's and bad boy affiliates Lil Kim's classic debut.
Appeared on bigs classic double album.
Appeared on Puff's classic album
Appeared on ma$e classic album
Those albums would go on to sale
23 million plus.
Had a very bad boyish sounding second album.
Also had a stint in NO Way out tour.
He was ready for the big stage and finally had a mega hit with HARD KNOCK LIFE, although not produced by the team, was along that formula of success.
