This has nothing to do with him being hood

Most rap fans don’t know who these people. I sure as hell don’t

What you do know would conveniently fit in a Prius with room to spare, so you not knowing Madlib or J Dilla isn't surprising

Chances are if you

The masses have no clue who produced these songs, and most 30 and under people might not even know these by name

At best these are some radio songs they heard in passing when they were kids and forgot about

If you’re not an underground fan, or a nerdy hip-hop head, you don’t know who Madlib and Dilla are in 2025

And I say this as someone who knows everything they ever made

They’re niche, unsung heroes that never received mainstream recognition despite working with a few mainstream artists

G Herbo def has no idea who they are and that’s not his lane
Tbh I barely know who Madlib is. But he said what’s some known tracks. These were all definitely hits. Especially Vivrant Thing. I wouldn’t expect anybody of a certain age to know these songs. But he definitely does

I grew up around older hip hop heads who were very well versed in the culture, and I never heard of Dilla or Madlib until I started using forums

Outside of producers I personally know, I’ve only known one person in my entire life who mentioned Dilla by name

If I stood on a street with a picture of Dilla or Madlib, I’d be out there for hours before anyone recognized them

That’s by choice though Madlib and Dilla were anti-mainstream guys who intentionally stayed underground during a massively commercial time in hip-hop

I don’t think they’d want G Herbo to know who they are

This is a weird question.

Anyone who follows Hip-hop a little bit heard of that name (Dilla)

So a rapper SHOULD be expected to know who Dilla is

This level of low expectation explain why rap is bound to die

An artform has some names you should know if you take part in it

But it seems that rap is an exception where ignorance and stupidity are rewarded

I think nowadays rap is so fragmented and far removed from the golden era. Couple that with an increasing amount of humans reveling in being low knowledge... And yeah I have zero expectations for rappers nowadays knowing about the history of the genre.

It is what it is.

Tbh most people don’t know producers like that unless they some superstars. So I can understand Herb not knowing them. Matter fact I guarantee some of my homeboys never heard of them either. Some people like to know who produced tracks while others don’t care

Even my lady didn’t know who DJ Premier was but handpicked DWYCK on her gym playlist

Exactly, bro. Prior to the “super producer” era, producers were basically invisible. Even today, if a producer doesn’t make an effort to make their face known, nobody will know who you are or what you produced. All the attention goes to the artist

They weren’t 2000s street producers (Heatmakerz, Alchemist) and they’re not mainstream (Kanye, Pharrell, Timbaland, etc)

They occupy a really narrow lane of underground rap that very few people are tapped into

Why would G Herbo know who they are?
because people assume rappers take their career serious.
or they assume someone who makes a living from something digs into its history.

Most people just show up to collect a paycheck and then go home...
very few take what they do serious.

Herbo is someone that naturally has talent but hasnt put any work into being great.

The heights
I’m from Detroit and the people i grew up around and hung with we was not listening to slum village and j dilla. I can see the people in the streets of Chicago not listening to common.
Exactly I don't remember my uncles bumping common and I for sure didn't bump common other than the song the corner young niqqas not trying to listen to that shyt I didn't read the entire thread yet but this reminds me of a argument in twitter a couple of years ago when someone from Chicago said we didn't listen to jay z like that in Chicago we listened to down south artists "hip hop heads" was in disbelieve and upset :mjlol:

Majority of these dudes are just hustlers trying to get the bag any which way they can

They not invested into hip hop as a historian or trying to make it a long run

It’s let me get this quick dollar as soon as I can
