OK, I finally heard the real version and honestly, Cole did just fine. I understand the purist only wanting Gang Starr/90's affiliates on the LP though. I'm sure people are nervous it will be like a "Born Again" or Pac situation where they just put in current rappers for the hell of it. With that said, I think Cole did pretty good. Hopefully this will bring some of the new generation's ears that missed out on Gang Starr. I liked that he kept the subject matter with Guru using the Diamond as a metaphor and his flow was straight. I wasn't too hot about that fast flow in the beginning but it came together good. So it worked out. But Guru's "Old" Bars still dominated and that was cool that he had 3 verses basically. He shouted out Premo on the track too. We don't know how much unreleased material Premo is working with.
Cole seemed grateful to be on the song so that was cool to hear. Overall I think it should be NaS, M.O.P., Big Shug etc type of features. And I want 100% Premo on the boards. This needs to be as close to a real Gang Starr LP as possible with Guru not being here. I also agree that there was something about Premo's production and Guru. Yes he made Legendary Records with NaS, Big and Jay etc...but Guru presence and voice just worked so much on his beats. Here's a dope Big Shug joint featuring Guru. I'm hoping for this type of sound on the album. This new record had that old school Gang Starr sound that's why it works so well and invokes memories and emotions. Also yes "The Ownerz" wasn't better than "Moment of Truth" but it was still hard.
