does anybody think it could potentially hurt his development to 'throw him into the fire'?

I don't necessarily think it can *hurt* his development per se. More real time experience is always better imho. Lackluster performances from Geno will hurt his chances of starting again though.

You know that the NY media will come down extra hard on Geno. They won't give him any leeway.

Tell that to David Carr. That boy still shellshocked from his first few years with the Texans.

I saw Troy Aikman his rookie season. He was in a worse situation but managed.

There's no exact science to this.
I agree that theres no exact science, but the situation was completely different

cowboys were in a shytter and aikman was #1 overall pick. you pretty much have to play #1 overall picks. it took aikman 3 years to become good while the rest of the cowboys team got better as well.

do you really think geno will get that time ? if geno throws 18 picks and less tds, like aikman did his first two years, he'll prolly be looked at as replacement candidate.

the difference is cowboys understood the team was bad. that same draft they got a multi pro bowl center and guard, the next year they got emmitt.
Im not sure the jets brass and media and fans understand team building 101.

Ive said it before that Im not a huge geno fan at all, but the kid's not gonna get a fair shot.

Of course Geno is not going to get a fair shot. He was a 2nd round pick. He's not going to be automatically given the keys to the franchise. You can't compare him to somebody like Aikman who was a 1st round pick. He should be compared to somebody like Andy Dalton. Dalton, like Geno, was picked in the 2nd round in a weak draft class. It was a low risk, high reward. Luckily for Cincy, it worked out. But if he came in and struggled, don't think for one second that he wouldn't have been replaced. If Cincy was put in a position to draft Luck/RG3 you really think they woulda passed them up to give Dalton another shot? fukk no! Dalton woulda been given the Jimmy Clausen treatment.

Point is Geno is was a 2nd round luxury pick. He's not viewed as the future of this franchise. If he was, they would have picked him in the 1st round. He will get his opportunity to show that he can lead this team. If he does he stays. If he has a -Sanchez-like rookie season and we're put in a position next year to draft Bridgewater/Boyd, then Geno is done. It's that simple

I know there was more patience back in the day for QBs to develop and being a first rounder means almost certain fire by baptism, but we're here, Geno is in the same position and its up to him to either sink or swim. Hes mos def in a fukked up position but it is what it is.

He's the bridge to Clowney or Bridgewater if he sucks.

I wasnt the one who made the aikman comparison, btw.
dalton is a good example, but bengals rebuilt the year they got him and green, and have been winning on the strength of defense more so than offense, Id say. if jets defense can come back and be half of what they were three years ago...itd make it a LOT easier for geno.

If it hasn't already been said, does anybody think this is just to avoid an in-season QB controversy????

Give Geno the start now, if he flies...GREAT. If he flops....then you go right back to Sanchez, no questions asked.

On the flip side, if Sanchez started out the season mediocre, then Rex has to hear every week(or everyday) about making a switch

No need to go back to Sanchez. He's not a solution while in Geno, you're hoping to find one and move on from if he isn't.

If Geno's confidence get broken and he falls apart then Geno maybe gets us Clowney... and I'm happy. If Geno wins us some games and learns on the job, developing while showing potential even though our time is still bottom 5-8...I'll take that no problem. I think starting Geno is a win-win because of that, though it would have been cool if he developed with no stress while Sanchez did just enough to convince some dumb gm to take a chance on him in a trade for a late round pick...but I really don't picture that scenario manifesting itself in any circumstance.

I think this is a misnormer. Carr could have learned from his first few seasons, but he had poor pocket presence and couldn't beat the blitz. I think teams "figured him out" and took advantage of his inability to beat the blitz. DCs started throwing complicated blitz packages at him and he never recovered. All the best rookie QBs last season could beat the blitz.
