But.. How long was Pete's run on HIS production style in that 90s era? Who was banging on Pete door for heat? Nobody

He can't talk. Point blank. Soundscape had shifted drastically. Nas would have been left behind if it wasn't for Trackmasters

Nas did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do and he had all of the boom bap heads hating. Pete Rock bytched about it which is why Nas didn’t fukk with him for over a decade. Q-Tip complained, but at least he did it privately.

Nas and Trackmasters proved everybody wrong though. It Was Written is a stone cold classic and everyone embraces that fact now. Rolling Stone went from giving it 2 stars in 96 to including it on on their list of 500 Greatest Rap Albums of all time in 2023.

Pete is easily a Top 5 producer though, bro.

He can definitely talk his sh*t, lol. He's in there with dudes like RZA and Premier.
Not debating where he stands. The sound changed. Rap content shifted as well.

Pete can be wrong. (as he was) Qtip my fav. he was wrong as well. and thats ok.

Listen.. Trackmasters had heat.

Those IWW album cuts were pure heat..and the unreleased shyt Nas made with them. Like Stoute said, he would have faded out like Kool G Rap without them

This here......sometimes I play IWW in the whip and I think to myself "damn, this album might even be better than Illmatic......" Trackmasters laced Nas with some real heat.
The Message, Street Dreams, Affirmative Action, then you had cuts like Take it in Blood and the Primo produced I Gave You Power......

IWW is *arguably* better than Illmatic on some levels.

The sound didn't change from '94 to '96.

Hip Hop was at its most diverse when IWW was being recorded in '95.

Stoute was just chasing money, and wanted more radio-friendly sh*t, as he's said many times. That's all it was. Rifkin signed Pete to Loud for millions in '98, and gave dude a label to sign his own acts. And he dropped a classic on that deal. So his "sound" was perfectly in demand and bro was still making millions. Premier, Pete and Tip were all at their most successful and making their most money ever in that era. So this wasn't about them not being in demand or being "outdated", this was about a dude wanting to make Nas more of what he saw as "commercial".

Actually, if Just Blaze is on SC2 or helped out with it, we could be in for something good.

JB def has that soulful vibe Ghost likes.

Look at how Ghost flowed over the "Girls Girls Girls" beat a few years back and how he always says he wishes he got that beat instead of Jay

While some of the tracks may appear short, it seems this could mean Ghost coming with that one-take ‘stream of thought’ energy you would expect from a sequel to Supreme Clientele.

Optimistically, I hope it's that vibe. But Rap Kingpin had the Big Doe Rehab era Ghost vibe to me :manny:

In prnciple I don't disagree but I will say that almost every JB beat I've heard in the past half decade or more has been a letdown.

His style sounds really dated IMO.

But he's one of the best to do it

Damn you think so?

Which producers would you like to see on this? You think he kept any of the Kanye beats at all from when he was working with him given the controversy around Kanye now?
