Why?
Bulletproof Wallets, Ghostface Killah's followup to Supreme Clientele had a really shytty history. Ghost has talked before about his annoyance at RZA for not being able to clear samples for key album tracks such as The Sun, The Watch, Good Times, and Flowers. RZA reworked Flowers' beat before the album's release, but the other tracks were left off. In addition, Ghostface was also upset at the label for improperly sequencing the album. However, through multiple promo cassettes, CDs, vinyls, and a wide variety of early tracklist sequences, we can get a pretty good idea of Ghostface Killah's original intent for the album.
Bulletproof Wallets was promoted as an album "by Ghostface Killah featuring Raekwon" similarly to the marketing for their previous collaborations together
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... and
Ironman. I chose to roughly base this comp off of a
10-track vinyl promo for Bulletproof Wallets as Raekwon features on a large chunk of the tracklisting. By using this as a framework, I wanted to reconstruct
Bulletproof Wallets with the focus being on the collaborative efforts of Ghostface and Raekwon. In addition to the 10-tracks, I also added the additional Raekwon collaboration
The Watch and reincorporated the two interludes found on the release version. Never Be the Same Again, Stairway to Heaven, Maxine, Walking Through the Darkness, Ice, The Juks, The Hilton, and Strawberry are all taken from the release version of the album. The Sun and The Watch are both taken from the Hidden Darts compilation. Flowers and Good Times were both taken from rips of promo singles since the release version of Flowers doesn’t have the original beat and the Hidden Darts version of Good Times had some extremely bad distortion. The Forest is an extended version of the release track with an extra hook. Removed both the skits as they suck ass. Removed four of the weaker songs from the release version: Street Chemistry (which wasn't on any of the pre-release tracklists), Love Session (which ended up replacing Good Times on release), Ghost Showers, and Theodore. I think that if
Bulletproof Wallets hadn't had such a trouble release, the album would be regarded as a classic up there with
Ironman and
Supreme Clientele. I hope you enjoy my spin on it.
