I know Illmatic didn’t connect with Detroit not one bit. Now Biggie on the other hand was voted artist and song of the year (juicy) by my middle school news show. We thought Illmatic was boring keeping it real. The year 2000 is when I finally was able to appreciate the album, but it was not the same as experiencing when it was released

Same ish in Cincinnati. I didn’t fully appreciate Illmatic until almost 10 years later.

It was Commissioned by the collective. She wrote the review and proposed the undeserved 5 mics.

Even if she proposed the five mics, she wasn't the end all/be all. There were multiple people who had ultimately had input on the decision. Whether you feel it's underserved is beside the point. One of the guys that was a part of the brain trust went back and discussed which albums he felt weren't worthy that got 5 mics. He still said Illmatic deserved it years later.

The most talented rapper from Detroit remade Illmatic front to back :yeshrug:

I already posted the receipts from Miss Info. There is no way to dispute what we are saying. @bigbadbossup2012 is a notorious anti Illmatic troll. I usually don’t engage with him because it’s pointless and he just ignores facts, but for posterity sake I correct obvious lies such as Miss Info singlehandedly giving Illmatic 5 mics.

It’s kinda fun to read old reviews of shyt from when it dropped. I read an old Led Zeppelin review from Rollingstone Mag and they said shyt like “meh there’s better blues bands”.

shyt was so ahead of its time that the old heads of that time didn’t get it. Fast forward they would call it a 10/10 psych rock classic that changed music.

That’s why I don’t trust old heads or any one person when it comes to new music. It takes a whole generation to identify the greatness of the new or the shift in music. Years later they change their reviews too, just like albums that got 4 or 4.5 in the source and later changed to 5/5 probably are better than those that got 5/5 off the bat.

LOL, the review was obviously biased, but it was more coastal bias than what she looks like. While the review is biased, it does have some merit, when you read reviews of Illmatic from that era or media coverage of Nas, he was discussed as the East Coast messiah. So when an artist drops a debut and is already being placed on such a pedestal, it amplifies the hype. So to anyone going into this album based on the hype more so than the music, there's a strong possibility you're going to get a review like this regardless of race. What she's saying is the same critiques of the album that people still knock the album for.

In terms of her saying Nas was posturing, this isn't really different from Jay saying "You witnessed it from your folks pad". To say Nas was posturing was kind of contradictory since a lot of Hip Hop at that time was posturing.

I don't agree at all about your feelings towards Illmatic

But I find it ironic how people (not you specifically) at that time were mad at Nas for making an album like It Was Written, when you had a growing sentiment that Illmatic was boring, and that Illmatic struggled to go Gold. The same people who criticized him was the same ones not buying his Illmatic album. Hilarious lol

Jay was wrong. And it took him years into the game for him to even come to that conclusion about Nas in the first place. And this chick is an idiot from the door because she didn’t even accurately state where he’s from to know if he was posturing or not. She’s not a New Yorker. Let alone from Queens. And she’s some lily white bytch. The whole review held ZERO weight bro.
