Jay was wrong. And it took him years into the game for him to even come to that conclusion about Nas in the first place. And this chick is an idiot from the door because she didn’t even accurately state where he’s from to know if he was posturing or not. She’s not a New Yorker. Let alone from Queens. And she’s some lily white bytch. The whole review held ZERO weight bro.

Not saying he or she was right. All I'm saying is this review isn't necessarily saying anything that hasn't been reiterated on numerous occasions by people who weren't white.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
I wasn't specifically talking about 1994. I'm talking about opinions that I've come across in general.
This is what I’m saying. The only reason people even attempt to say that about Nas is based on their impressions of him later on whether it be the shyt Cormega was saying about him or whatever else. There’s no way in hell she could legitimately say some shyt like that in real time when that album dropped. She sounds dumb bro.

LOL, the review was obviously biased, but it was more coastal bias than what she looks like. While the review is biased, it does have some merit, when you read reviews of Illmatic from that era or media coverage of Nas, he was discussed as the East Coast messiah. So when an artist drops a debut and is already being placed on such a pedestal, it amplifies the hype. So to anyone going into this album based on the hype more so than the music, there's a strong possibility you're going to get a review like this regardless of race. What she's saying is the same critiques of the album that people still knock the album for.

In terms of her saying Nas was posturing, this isn't really different from Jay saying "You witnessed it from your folks pad". To say Nas was posturing was kind of contradictory since a lot of Hip Hop at that time was posturing.
The funny part about it is the review is one paragraph. All we really know is that she horribly missed the mark in retrospect and that she seems to have no demographic bonafides to be reviewing hip hop in the first place.

I really want someone to post this on her twitter. I don’t use Twitter. Her response could be something along the lines of: I have no recollection of this. I didn’t want to even review hip hop but they asked me to do it at the last minute and it was a check :yeshrug:

Maybe. I see this review is from the L.A. Times on the Wiki page for Illmatic. Two other reviews from 1994 held the same sentiment, but both reviews from white dudes (one of them was older).

In regard to Nas posturing, I never got that from his music especially on Illmatic. It was him talking about what was going on around him.

A lot of the reviews from there are one short. Most reviews where an album gets a negative rating are going to be short. They are essentially telling the reader the album isn't worth your time or money.

It would be interesting to see how she views the album now being that its viewed as one of the greatest albums ever, it has documentary that aired on Showtime and I think in theaters. Nas performed it with an orchestra on PBS and it has since went on to sell over 2 million copies.

But that sentiment about the whole East Coast thing was even present at The Source. One of the guys that had a hand in it getting 5 mics knew there's be backlash from people who were disgruntled at The Chronic not getting 5 mics.

No. It was the Source’s rating.
If it was her rating, others wouldn’t have the ability to change it.

How far did you go in school? Your reading comprehension is abysmal.

She was delegated to do it and they signed off. The fact that she gave him 5 mics didn't start with ME, i know because of THEM.
He got 5 mics from an Asian culture vulture. And it's a female, fukk outta here

Even if she proposed the five mics, she wasn't the end all/be all. There were multiple people who had ultimately had input on the decision. Whether you feel it's underserved is beside the point. One of the guys that was a part of the brain trust went back and discussed which albums he felt weren't worthy that got 5 mics. He still said Illmatic deserved it years later.
I could care less. The album was rated by a Asian female. That's a fact. Her name is on the review. Any person with a job answers to someone. So......?
